I also was on stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom when Earl hit the stage with Odd Future for the first time ever. Shouts to Clancy, Kelly, and the whole OFWGKTA. What a special moment…

On May 16th of last year I was stuck in the middle of a nightmare. It was the day after my 18 year old brother-in-law to be, Spencer Datt, was killed in a car driven by a drunk driver. It was a scene out of a gut wrenching movie, but the roles were all played by my loved ones. All of us going in and out of fits of indescribable pain–the hardest hit of course being my future mother and father in law, my other future brother in law, and the woman who had become my fiance exactly one month earlier.

It had been 36 hours since our lives had been shattered. The big crowd at the house had thinned out and at this point, on an awful and dreary Monday night. We sat in my in laws’ kitchen quietly talking and figuring out arrangements. Then the side door opened and a teenager who I didn’t recognize walked in the room, followed by another, and then another, and then another. I looked to my fiance and her father and knew that this was Spencer’s high school basketball team coming to pay respects to the family that they knew not just from high school basketball, but summer league, rec league, and Magruder High’s summer camp. One by one each player greeted Spencer’s family–hugging each of them–most everyone crying.

When the kids had greeted everyone, my father in law did what he has always done during this awful year, thanked others for their kindness, and ensured them that Spencer loved them and that we were touched by their presence. We then sat around with the kids and they told us stories of how Spencer was as a teammate. They told us how funny he was and how great a shooter he was. We all cracked a smile and even chuckled a bit as they told us that no matter how intense Coach Dan Harwood’s timeout screaming might be that Spencer would often be biting his nails and staring at the rafters– unfazed.

I knew then that this was a special group of kids, because I knew the agony it was for all of us to be in the Datt house during that time. I could not imagine being 16 or 17 and choosing to go there and spend time with this heartbroken family. But they did. They were warm and loving and they made us truly feel that they were suffering in their own way too.

As months went by I would see tweets from Spencer’s teammates and even communicated semi regularly with one of them–Justin Witmer –a senior now who two years earlier had been taken under Spencer’s wing as the new kid who also liked to hover by the three point line and knock it down when given the chance. We never discussed basketball in our tweets back and forth–just Spencer.

Soon the basketball season came and we were again touched to find out that in addition to warming up to the song “Who Dat?” by J. Cole (with double meaning because Spencer’s last name is Datt and because he loved J. Cole), the team had decided to dedicate the season to Spencer and make warm up Jerseys that had Spencer’s number and the phrase “Who Datt?” on the back. It was a pretty nice thing to hear.

Magruder dropped their season opener to notorious DC area powerhouse, Dematha, but then quickly picked up a win. And another. And another. In fact, they would not lose again. As I write this story the team is still basking in the glory of the State Championship that they won this weekend. These same kids who had the heart to come check in on their friend’s mourning family just a day after the worst moment of their lives also had the heart to win 26 games in a row and a state championship. The starting five is made up of Witmer, Garland Owens (a high flyer and shut down defender), Luke Ruland, Nick Griffin, and an electrifying 5 ft 4 junior named JJ Epps.

When the game was over and the trophies had been handed out, the team gathered at center court to celebrate winning a championship with Spencer’s # 20 jersey in their hands, but this was more than just winning. Winning a championship does nothing to bring Spencer back, but it did bring a smile to the face of his parents who looked on from the crowd at Comcast Center in College Park. It also reminded us that we weren’t the only ones who knew just how special Spencer was. We were not the only ones who were touched by his smile and his kindness, and his sincere interest in other people. Spencer was a vibrant, warm, and smart kid who was wise beyond his years. And he was important enough to drive this team to heights that they will remember long beyond their playing days.

And out of lefffffffffft field!! This dude is super funny. Didn’t realize how good he was til this interview honestly. Always just thought of his impersonations. I was sleeping.

As you know- I am a not a born New Yorker. I had to spend a month supporting the Giants on the air even though I live and die with the Redskins. When it comes to basketball I have been a Celtics fan for 25 years–literally. I always liked the Knicks cuz of my grandpa but it was never too passionate for obvious Celtic pride. That said– I would be lying if I said that I was not obsessed with this kid. This is the most dramatic entrance into pro sports that I can recall. He is an underdog, a minority, a Harvard grad, a good religious kid, and he has a magnetic style to the way he plays the game. I was in the Garden on Friday to see young Jeremy take on Kobe and it was one of the best events I have ever been to. I am happy for Asian Americans and I am happy for New York in general, because this is just pure fun.

It features production from Kev Brown, Oddisee, Quartermaine, and more. Sean has a twang and style that I have never heard before and this album is a true album for anyone who has ever smoked, dealt, or had anything to do with that greenery. I could not cosign this record any harder. But before BTS drops, we have this ode to the pause mix. It is a collection of Sean features, verses, and new freestyles. Patrice was truly one of the most insightful and smartest comics I have ever known. More than anything I admire his commitment to who he was. Patrice passed up more money and fame to be true to who he was as a comedian. He would not compromise his artistic integrity and as a result, the respect for him among his peers is unmatched. So ultimately even though we lost him way too soon– he left us knowing how much his peers and true fans loved him and that’s pretty cool. RIP brother.

In addition to the pain of losing someone who was such a wonderful and sweet spirit, there has also been the pain of unfulfilled potential. Spencer just started rapping a few months before he was killed. The first beat I ever heard him rhyme on was “6ft 7″. As it turned out he was a natural, improving on every one of the freestyles he recorded.

Seeing as Spencer was a HUGE J Cole fan and his last name being Datt– he had to rhyme on “Who Dat” which he planned on making a fun family song with his brother Conor (“I’m rhymin with CD you would think I’m in stores”). Even my fiance wanted to get on the song. Immediately after hearing Spenc’s verse, though, I told my girl that she could not jump on the song with him, becaue he was actually spitting some serious heat that was not to be made into a joke.

So when Spencer died I thought it would be incredibly cool to get Spencer on a song with Cole who he loved so much. I told Cole the situation and he said he would be honored to be on it. You have to know this about Spencer. He wasn’t just a fan of music. He promoted who he loved to all of his friends. There are countless people who are now fans of J Cole or Lupe Fiasco because of Spencer’s passion for their music. Then of course there is Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino.

I had reached out to Donald Glover right after Spencer died just to tell him how much Spencer loved him and that I was going to start playing his music on the show and I wanted him to know it’s all because Spencer put me on to him. He was truly touched and asked to hear a bit more about Spencer. So I told him.

As I was wrapping the mixtape I thought about Donald being on Rock the Bells etc and how we had been planning to meet up and I thought to send him “Who Datt Pt 2″ . He wrote to it the night I sent it and returned his verse within an hour. The result is Spencer on a posse cut with two of his favorites and in my opinion — Spencer holds his own.

So Georgetown is touring China and playing different Chinese professional teams and in this game — things got weird. Game was physical from Jump with the Chinese team shooting 57 free throws, but I cannot imagine Georgetown’s play could have warranted what happened at the end–which was a borderline criminal attack. I have never seen a fight that looked like this in American sports.

Nothing fancy about this…just some real Juan Ep shit…feat. Dominican Drew.

As many of you may know  by now– Alexa and I lost her little brother last week in a car accident. We are still reeling and trying to figure out how one continues life when such a huge piece is missing. Before Spencer passed away, he had started dabbling in rhyming. I wish I had told him how much potential he had, but I didn’t want to gas him up so early on. I should have. And I should have told him that he was just about my favorite person on earth to hang out with, but I think he knew that. He was an amazing person who brought joy to everyone. I will take him with me in everything I do from now until forever. I love you Spencer.

As a brand new rapper–he actually had his own style. He borrowed from his favorites, but he really had his own spin. Keep in mind–he was brand new, but I love the way he sounded. He actually was an MC.

Who knows how long he will be back for or how many appearances he will make? Maybe just Wrestlemania or maybe he will be drawn back in to do a bit more work than that. But for one night, Wrestling fans were treated to one of the best wrestling moments of the last 10 to 15 years. Rocky solidified himself firmly as one of the true all time greats when he walked into the arena after seven years and cut a promo better than anyone in the biz is capable of cutting.  I will be heading to Atlanta in April without question.

Question — Does The Rock’s return make you much more likely to purchase WM 27?
