So Much to Say about Michael Vick — A Blog Post from August 2009

I just stumbled on a post that I never published because it wasn’t completed and decided to read it. I thought it would be pretty interesting to post it now given how things have played out over the last year and a half. Enjoy….

I have had so many different feelings on this recent chapter in Michael Vick’s story that it has been hard to even put my feelings together into something one might consider an opinion.

First and foremost I am happy. I’m happy that I will see Michael Vick play football again–even if it is in those putrid awful colors.  This is now finally going to be common thought and I bet you will start hearing it more and more, but Michael Vick may be the best athlete to ever play in the NFL. Up until now he has always been discussed as a failed quarterback–with brilliant speed and ability, but more than anything a bad passer and a guy who loses the big game.

I don’t see it that way.

For me he has been the most exciting player that I have ever seen. He is the only other athlete that has made me have Jordan-like feelings–NOT in terms of greatness or tanacity, but sheer ability. His arm strength is mind-boggling. No one has a stronger arm and no one can use that arm on the move the way Vick can. He can throw the ball across his body on a string.

He also has a lot of flaws–most notably– he has been a jerk.  Michael Vick was treated like a cash cow for way too long and it clearly got to his head. On top of that–he took part in something that was just disgusting–regardless of background and upbringing. He murdered dogs brutally himself. And for that he deserved to pay a big price.

All that said–everyone deserves a second chance.  And as crazy it is to watch the media build him up just as fast as they helped tear him down–I don’t think it is just the media. It’s all of us. We love celebrity gossip, but we also love a great comeback story. It is the best kind of entertainment. And in Vick–we have the chance for a great story. So I guess I can’t blame the media for their shameless jock-riding.

And Vick does appear to be remorseful. Before he went to prison he seemed emotionless–almost totally empty. And although he is yet to really get past generic apologies (including during a very soft interview from James Brown on 60 Minutes). he does seem more human. Whether or not he truly feels bad is a mystery, but it is clear that he figured out how much he offended and upset millions of Americans.

One person upset by Vick’s cruelty to dogs was his new teammate, Donovan McNabb. McNabb is not only a dog lover, but he is a fellow black quarterback who has been regularly abused by ungrateful and sometimes racist fans in Philly. Yet he chose to stick his neck out to help out a fellow black quarterback.

—That is where this blog was left, but it is pretty interesting looking back a year and a half and thinking about how things have transpired since I wrote it. –

  1. my team are the bills and i know we suck. but my second fav. team

would have to be anywhere vick goes. he’s been through a lot. it’s

great to see him now after all the bullshit he caused for himself.

now it’s time to win a super bowl. had they beaten the eagles back

in 04, they would’ve went to the super bowl and might’ve won. it was

what it was. he and the eagles have a chance this year. and as for

mcnabb with the skins, his coach is a rat bastard. to question a 15 year

qb to lead your squad is an insult. monday is going to exciting. and vick

has some unfinished business. you hit it dead on when you said he’s as

exciting as mj & it was dope how you embraced his arm. it pisses me

off when people say he can’t throw. good read. peace to the gods

and please give us one of those special thanksgiving juan eps like you

guys always do. just the two of you this time though. it’s been 3 years

on this month when you guys gave birth to juan. pause!

  2. No one has a stronger arm than Vick? Please.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaW5ia-3ofo

…and that’s just the “old” Green Bay QB.

There’s no doubting Vick’s ability, there’s also no doubting his dirty awful soul. Any guy who can take a dog and swing him around like a jump rope, slamming it to the ground, again and again, until the dog is dead??? There’s something wrong with that person (and that’s not counting the electrocutions and drownings). I’m not saying he didn’t pay his debt to society, he most certainly did. But just because he did, that doesn’t mean that I now have to like (or appreciate) the guy. Because I don’t. Fuck Michael Vick. I’m glad that fuck has herpes. I think he’s a piece of shit asshole. Then again, I LOVE DOGS!

  3. Who gives a fuck what you think pussy! For a guy who hates him so much, you sure did spend a lot of time searching his name in google and righting that long comment

Whats a jerk off! Mike is proving all you haters wrong and will get 20 million a year if he keeps up this kind of play on the field! LOL….

    Move the fuck on punks!

Only God can judge us when we die!

  4. Society is so full of hypocrisy as evidenced by Rosenberg’s piece. A Redneck can shoot a defenseless bear or deer in the woods and Sarah Palin can advocate shooting wolves from helicopters for sport… but dog fighting (between a breed solely created for that purpose) is a crime. He wasn’t fighting Labrador Retrievers. GTFOH! Why is it ok to kill one type of animal for sport but another is off limits? At least, a Pitbull has a fighting chance (no pun intended). We can watch Racehorses pumped up with all kinds of ungodly steroids and if they fracture or break a leg call them glue! But that’s ok? GTFOH!

Finally, we’ve got a “liberal” in Rosenberg who’s a stans for the REDSKINS!? Would it be cool to cheer for a team called the Baltimore Black Bucks too!? GTFOH! The hypocrisy.

  5. dog fighting/baiting in the black south has a far longer and richer historical tradition than animal rights (or football, for that matter).
people love dogs, because they are adorable and are usually fucking awesome. you can play catch with them, and they love their owners.
but what if your principle understanding of a dog is violent in nature? what if you haven’t been exposed to friendly dogs, but only crazy ass pitbulls, like the ones Big Boi has in “ATL”, that actively want to kill you. you wouldn’t love dogs.
FURTHER, what if underneath that, in a VERY recent past, dogs were used as a violent instrument of a rascist and hateful system to suppress your people. dogs attacked your father when he was marching for a equal rights. you wouldn’t love dogs.

Jadakiss once wrote “what you know about copping a house to fight pitts in?”. THATS THE ONLY REASON DUDE BOUGHT THE HOUSE!!! TO FIGHT DOGS IN IT!! HE COULDN’T FIND AN OUTDOOR AREA OR SOME SHIT?? HE BUY THAT SHIT IN CASH OR DO HE GOT A MORTGAGE?? HE PAY UTITILIES? I BET HE DOES CUZ AFTER A DOGFIGHT YOU GOTTA HAVE SOME HOT WATER AND ELECTRICITY AND SHIT, TO TAKE A SHOWER AND MICROWAVE SOME SNACKS AND SHIT.

  6. Get one thing straight-there is no such thing as a vicious dog-they only become that way after a human abuses them to the point that they go crazy. What Michael Vick did is unforgivable. He does not have remorse, he is only sorry that he got caught, lost endorsements, and had to sign autographs in a boys club for a little while. There is a special place in hell for Michael Vick, and you vile bastards who defend him can be his servants there.

  7. It’s funny that @PaulSKI knows “the purpose” for which pit bulls were created (fighting). My pit bull gives me nothing but love. Wow, what a failure she is. Listen dudes, I’m not suggesting the world isn’t full of hypocrisy–it is. I’m only suggesting that the torture and murder of animals, particularly in the manner that Vick did it, is suuuuper fucked up. If you can’t get behind that, then you’re an asshole. And that’s not my opinion–you’re truly an asshole. It’s science.

    Enjoy your herpes, Michael Vick.

  8. @PaulSKI-yes i do need help. I need help understanding what Sarah Palin or offensive team names have to do with someone who drowned puppies in trash cans with his bare hands

  9. yo i dont want to have to repeat myself, but i feel like i was kind of sort of on POINT with my comment.

  10. @Joel and Ballpark.

To answer your question, in the same way you can’t fathom the idea of someone fighting Pit Bulls. I can’t fathom why someone would kill a defenseless animal, grazing in the forest… not for food… but for sport! LIKE SARAH PALIN. Just because you can play frisbee with one and not the other doesn’t make it less cruel.

And oh yeah… like I said he wasn’t fighting Golden Retrievers…

“The American pit bull terrier is the product of interbreeding between terriers and a breed of bulldogs to produce a dog that combined the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the bulldog. In the United States, these dogs were used as catch dogs for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, to drive livestock, and as family companions; however, some were selectively bred for their fighting prowess, and starting in the early 20th century, they began to replace the bull terrier as the “dog of choice” for dog fighting in the United States.

Although there are historical accounts of dog fights going back to the 1750s, widespread activity emerged after the Civil War, with professional pits proliferating in the 1860s, mainly in the Northeast.

Ironically, it was a common form of entertainment for police officers and firemen—the “Police Gazette” served as a major source of information on dog fighting for many years. Although many laws were passed to outlaw the activity, dog fighting continued to expand during the twentieth century.”

Soooo take your heads out of your assholes… assholes.

  11. Your logic is akin to a third-grader. Were roosters “created” for fighting? Any insecure person who feels a need to compensate for their many inadequecies can turn many different animals into vehicles of destruction. And if you criticize people who hunt for sport and not for food, then what the hell are you doing defending people who turn loving animals into killing machines for their own feeling of power and monetary gain? If there was any species that was bred purely for fighting, it is humans. I was going to try and dumb this down for you, but what’s the pont? You are truly a douche-bag and I hope you enjoy wandering through your ignorant life.

  12. @Joel – You’re truly ignorant. As clearly illustrated in your responses, by missing the point, it’s obviously gone over your head. I wasn’t defending anything I was making a point how hypocritical society is when you villainize Vick but give a pass and turn a blind eye to others who engage in the same acts. Just because one group has mainstreamed and sanctioned the killing of certain animals (see Rednecks)doesn’t make it less egregious. If Vick had to be punished then there are a whole community of people who justifiably should too. Obviously, you’re just another one of the sheep following popular thought. I’m sorry you can’t discern the contradiction or hypocrisy in this. Have a nice life following the flock. Dumbass.

  13. Since I am a sheep and do not understand sophisticated thought that comes from one such esteemed as yourself, could you please clarify? What is a redneck? And by being a redneck, does one deserve to be punished? Don’t bother writing a response because I am no longer going to be reading this post…you stupid motherfucker

  14. Oh and one more thing..
oh gee…did you just learn that the world is full of contradiction and hypocrisy? Aww….poor baby…you should have a wowwypop and clench your fists at the kiddies table until you realize life is not fair and you start acting like a big boy!
