First leak off of my Cypress Hill mixtape, “The Uprising” . The tape features Cypress covers from Yela, Jim Jones, Asher Roth, Noreaga & Imam Thug, Homeboy Sandman, The Lox, and more. “Rise Up” is in stores 4/20 and I’m hosting Cypress Hill and Diamond District Thursday night at SOBs.Give this song a good listen. It’s really hard to not be excited about Yelawolf after this joint.

It’s cool that Cypress Hill is getting a release like this dedicated to them. Obviously they’re one of the most popular rap groups of all time, but sometimes I think that they STILL get glossed over when people talk about important/influential hip-hop from the ’90s.. It’s not just musical innovation (RZA was admittedly very influenced by Muggs), but it is literally impossible to overstate how fucking HUGE Cypress was in the suburbs all over the US during the ’90s. Seriously I would hear “Ain’t Goin Out Like That”, “How I Could Just Kill A Man”, “Insane In The Brain”, really just about any song from the first 3 albums blasting out of someone’s car literally on a daily basis. And not just hip-hop fans either.. Metal fans, punks, fratboy stoner types, etc all got down. I’d say they were equally as important to hip-hop blowing up in the suburbs as Tribe, De La, Wu-Tang or anyone else, but for some reason Cypress doesn’t really get the same recognition.
