Real Late feat. Asher Roth

Crazy that this is Asher’s first appearance on Real Late, but it’s a good one. The album is out today and I don’t even pretend to be objective. I love the album, though. Go pay for it and happy 4 20!!

  3. dope show. If you’re having this giant epiphany about white rappers, you should give slug a chance. I LOVE every piece of music you play (more or less) so I’m not a huge emo rap nerd, i love that real, but atmosphere is dope too, and I’ve seen you give them a pretty hard time in the past. Just give a listen to ‘Lemons’ and give it a chance.

keep it up pete. You keep me excited about music

  5. fuck you rosenberg your a piece of shit. Your an asshole because you played us like a fiddle. You convinced us that you were the pure unafilterated under-the-nail hip hop and that you were a fuck the industry type dude. However listening to you know it makes me sick. you are blatantly exploiting a growing but by no means significant fan base in an effort to make contacts within the music industry. Your setting yourself up and its CLEAR. you don’t think of the fans at all you think of how can i use these fans. And you spin it in your head to make it seem like “no these are good guys, im just sharing what i think is cool” but you only think their cool because their giving you the time of day. Were subjected to shitty posts about asher roth who in a forum of talib mos-def, nas fans is the antichrist, what is wrong with you. your changing rosenberg, you’ve achieved minimal success and your already changing and selling us down the river. To succesfully keep and maintain peoples loyalty and support you have to always put their intrests first. take howard stern for example he would rip into guests when ever they droned on because he was neurotically concerned with how his core audience was viewing this bit and he knew they had short attention spans so he would liven the interview up with funny and rude questions. you feed us perfume laced shit and expect us to accept it. no.

    fuck u rosenberg

  13. I bought the Ash Roth album, and I like it.

Is it the greatest hip-hop debut ever, and in the same league as Illmatic or Reasonable Doubt? Certainly not, but it’s nice to finally have a young rapper who actually “made it”. The last 5 years have seen a depressing number of hot “up and comers” who forever descended into label hell, with their careers over before they began. That Ash dropped a mixtape, came to national attention, started grinding on the concert circuit and dropped a long play within a year’s time is refreshing.

Plus, it’s nice to have a young rapper who isn’t 1) a hopeless fashionista intent on bludgeoning me with tales of their tight jeans and designer sunglasses, and/or 2) a “tortured” artiste who whines about quitting the business before anybody even gives a fuck about their music. It’s funny that the white boy is the one to bring a good, unpretentious, blue collar mentality back to rap music.

Honestly, the record reminds me to some extent of early, “Whut Thee Album”-era Redman: heavy beats, a lot of stabs at humor, and a focus more on flow and personality than blowaway lyricism or contemplative social critique. A good start to what could be a fun career to watch.

  14. People need to remember the market…. I under stand the whole “hip-hop purist” attitude. But it would be dumb to write someone off completely at the start of thier career just because they are using thier age, and connection to the majority of people who actually still by music, to thier advantage. This kid is white, college-aged, and coming up in the time of “the internets”. So he is rapping about what he knows. Is it a little commercial and poppish, yes. But is that a good way to build a strong fan base, nd build a good career, and make some money, yes. The kid is smart, and he’s got skills. It would not be a positive career move to make a strictly undergorund, purely lyrical album that has very small selling power. The fact is this is not the same market that Illmatic broke in, and it will never be again. Who doesn’t want to be sucessful in thier job? whatever it may be. No offense but this kid has the potential to build a following larger than the other rappers quoted in above comments, strictly based on age, race, and connection to the times! I’m all for it. Not everyone has to be a struggling underground artist!

  15. I bought Asher’s album on 420 and it was pretty good – a few dumb songs but overall a good debut album. But with the rap climate the way it is you can’t really be mad at ANYONE for coming out with some dumb ringtone shit to set off their buzz. Em’s new single sucks but I still have faith he will but out a good, possibly great album. People need to stop hating on Asher just because they think I Love College is the extent of what he’s got. The era of the Illmatics and Reasonable Doubts as debuts is over; it sucks but people gotta just accept it and embrace whatever new shit is real, authentic hip-hop.

  16. Nice to hear some hip-hop from someone who actually seems down to earth and not trying to be something he isn’t. I’m so sick of swagger, cars, ice, ‘the struggle,’ etc.
