Thoughts on Marbury and Haynesworth
By pmd on Feb 28, 2009 in Sports |
So the Skins signed Albert Haynesworth for 100 gazillion dollars over 40 years or something. I mean the dude is a monster, but this worries me. This is a sign that Dan Snyder really is not going to feel the effects of the recession. He’s about to spend and spend. D’Angelo Hall was great for the time he was with us last year, but should he be the third highest paid D-Back in the league? Is a defensive lineman really going to be worth 100 some million dollars (including 40 of it guaranteed)? Also keep in mind–Haynesworth has played seven years in the league and missed a decent ammount of times with injuries. Oh and he did step on that dude’s head back in the day. Anyways–I hope he turns out to be dominant and worth every penny, but man–not the start to the off season that I expected.
Celtics finally locked down Stephon too. He played 13 minutes last night, scored a few, and even played some defense. He was involved in time outs and got a standing ovation when he first checked into the game. Mark my words–Stephon will not be a problem in Boston. Welcome aboard! BROOKLYNNNNN!
I don’t get why people are trippin’ over the Haynesworth figure. Before he signed with the Redskins, every NFL analyst was saying that he might be the first defensive player to ever get a $100 million salary. Then because the team that signs him is the Redskins, people are up in arms over it. He was getting near this kind of money from any of 6 other teams, he probably signed with the Skins because of the length of the contract and what the escalators were. And let’s not forget about what this does for Jason Taylor, he’s gonna be able to get free a lot more too.
I do agree that Hall got paid too much though. He’s a corner that can’t play man to man, and because of that he’s not worth near that kind of money.

From the NY Times:
“For a league that says it has been affected by the recession, the Redskins’ spree was jarring. The team recently laid off dozens of lower-level staff members, but Snyder has a history of making big-name acquisitions and sometimes overpaying for them.”
This is why Snyder sucks. You screw over the hard-working little people in your organization and then spend $150 mil on two players. What an asshole.

even the structure of the deal was kudos worthy. 32M the first 13 months frees up a lot of room under the cap to sign some considerable talent. Locking a guy up like that for 7 years is always a good move, Its spreads out the overhead cost over time. If he plays superbly as he will longer than the average team expectant 4 years to extend the contract would save the skins money on that type of player.
His guarantee for 41M after four years is another sign of a great structured deal for the team and their cap goals. Hanesworth is a player who pretty much plays a multiplayer role every-time he laces up those head stomping cleats. This acquisition automatically upgrades your defense from 4th to 3rd in the league at the end of preseason.
The Hall deal for 6 years at 54M was excessive for the caliber of player he is. He didn’t get a big signing bonus for the extension which ate up a lot of their cap.
1 out of 2 aint that bad. Lets see what they pick up in the draft.

Pardon me “guaranteed 41M after 3 years”… even better = less risk in year 2 and year 3 if he gets hurt. This gives them freedom to replace him with a free agent or a signee in those years and they now have a veteran to nurture and influence new acquisitions.

For the record, NFL players can survive without a 1981723489723947 million dollar contract.
For example, Marvin Harrison is one of the greatest, most modest recievers of all time, will most likely be inducted into the Hall of Fame and this guy’s contract barely pushed 13 million.
AND played most of his career with on team.
If he can do it, why can’t others?
P.S. When’s the new Juan Ep comin out?

Uh, Mark. Marvin would’ve made $13 million this year. That’s why the Colts released him, his cap figure was huge. He signed a 7 year, $67 million extension back in 04. That’s gigantic for a receiver.

both additions are disasters in the making. not to be negative
steph has been a cry baby since he was drafted. No where he’s been there hasn’t been a situation with coaches, teammates ect…
As for Haynesworth, I see another larry johnson situation, big contract, little production. Happy to see a brother paid though
peace

Haynesworth was expected 100 million, which I think is too much for the Redskins, but still it was expected…
Sorry Peter, but I’ve been saying fuck Marbury since Georgia Tech. He should of stayed in college for at least three years instead of one. It’s not that he’s a bad player, but that ego is messing up his game.
