Great beats, but Illa J is fucking wack.. I can definitely appreciate the idea of the record though, and if you’re a fan of Dilla’s Stakes Is High/Labcabincalifornia sound, I’d say this is a must hear.
The reason why I really like this album is not only because of the Jay Dee (before J Dilla) sound, but Illa J actually took his flow to a different type of level that only few can understand. He doesn’t have the line-for-line, simple, catchy flow that Dilla had, and those who think Illa J is wack is probably because they expected him to rap like his brother. I can relate on how Illa J did on this album because I use to rap like that in high school, but I can understand why some people wouldn’t feel his flow cause it ain’t for everybody.
I didn’t expect him to rap like Jay Dee at all. My main beef with him is that he’s just boring, leaves no impression and really might as well not be on the record.
But whatever, still a nice little tribute to his brother. I’m sure he’s a chill dude and I can’t hate on his intentions at all.
a lot of yall dont really seem to look for a simple nice flow and good harmonies…everyones focused so much on rhymes..sometimes an album is dope even without a crazy flow
no disrespect pmd, but weird that you say that “everyones focused so much on rhymes” cause i thought that one of the reasons why people complained about hip hop not being the same was cause everyones now focused so much on BEATS instead of rhymes
i can’t see how people not like illa j. people complain about the mainstream, then here comes somebody who brings us the type of hip hop we need, yet people still complain.
illa j, you got a fan here! i love the everytime song.
damn right. that’s that fire.

Yo Rosenberg, the set you did before the Ash Roth show was sick. It’s too bad the crowd was pretty wack.

illa j ain’t that great of a rapper, but 90% of these rappers out now ain’t either.
i can see how his flow ain’t made for everybody, but his subject matter is limited. then again, 90% of these rappers out now are limited also.
at least illa j got dilla on production, something that 90% of these rappers don’t have. lol.
