I know people are gonna come into this thread and immediately hate on Soulja Boy, but remember a few things.
1) Soulja Boy makes music for the kids, not for true hip hop heads.
2) You should be ashamed of yourself for being grown men hating on a kid.
3) Jealousy is a female trait, so if you’re envious of his success you should pull your skirt up and do something with your life.

Well spoken McFly

true.
All his songs sound the same, he must be copying and pasting his beats in fruit loops over and over to save time.
But my hats off. He is one successful kid..

okay
i’m 19 so i’m not some boom bap dinosaur chastising the kid just cus he’s making more paper than me
but the dude needs to know why he’s getting so much flack for his shit
he still sounds like he’s ignorant to the reasons behind the criticism. you cant keep using the “du’ i’m nintee’, sta’ ha’in’ on mah swag” shit.
i mean people do crazy stupid shit and get a million hits on youtube. you can’t justify your music by relying a format that praises the shit that youtube does.
plus the dude can’t complain when he doesn’t win awards (like the internet hip hop awards)
cus he aint making hip hop….and he should know that.
love you dudes (pause) but you should have pressed harder (pause) on the dude (pause)

You didnt challange him in anyway whatsoever. He’s fucking 19….did you think he was gonna get upset?? You shouldnt of even had him on the show.

I hate to be one of ‘those’ bloggers, ALL OF A SUDDEN, but please lets keep the guest appearances limited to MONUMENTAL rap acts of the golden age of rap. Aside from that the best Juan Eps are the ones when its Just you and Ciph and random Emmis “drop-ins”.
From a true fan, Lets put the velvet rope on guests to be HONORED with an appearance on Juan Ep. Its that serious/simple, however you like.

Lemme say….. I am NOT a fan of Soulja Boy……
Aint nobody “hatin’” on him because he’s makin’ money…..
The only reason he’s gettin’ his well deserved criticism is because he looks like a fuckin’ coon on TV…… He is apart of the Minstrel Show Hip-Hop has become…. if I put a picture of the Minstrel Show caricactures next to a picture of Soulja Boy…. you wouldn’t even know the difference….
I’m 20….. I don’t give a fuck how old Soulja Boy is…… Ice-T’s approach was questionable….. but he was 100% correct on what he had said….
I’m tired of fools like Soulja Boy justifyin’ their buffoonery by the amount of money they recieve just for lookin’ like buffoons on TV…….
He wasn’t the only one targeted for the same criticism…. If I remember correctly…. in 2006… people used to pit D4L’s and Dem Franchize Boyz name at the top of the worst rapper list…… I used to hear “This is REAL Hip-Hop fuck D4L and DFB”….. and them DAYUM “Chicken Noodle Soup” kids…… Now their irrelevant…… and Souljah’s Boy’s name is in that same sentence….. because he took Hip-Hop to an all new LOW…….
Best believe Soulja Boy will be irrelevant by next year…. when another wack ass artist wit’ his formula comes to light…….
Karen | Oct 28, 2008 | Reply
i agree with that thought on guests and i think weve been true to that for the most part…but…souljah boy is such a perfect guest for juan ep in the sense of what he represents in hip hop is a really big deal…people will look back and remember him whether laughing or not…
it was not my favorite episode in the least but it def had a few moments i enjoyed…

Im 20 and i listen too wu, tribe, fu shnickens, etc So just cause hes 18 doesnt give him an excuse to not be interested. (smh@dude not being interested at illmatic, but thats his pref so w.e)
Hes just into that trash music from the south that makes no sense master p, bussie, guccie, etc
Ignorant yes, Business savy no, but someone saw something in him and made him into a piggy bank.
Shout out to dude tho, cant blame someone for not liking something (EVEN THO ITS OBVIOUS THAT HE SHOULD IF YOURE IN HIPHOP) he did give it a chance and i rather him listen to pac then to no one at all
a tribe called quest | Oct 28, 2008 | Reply
in his defence. just because in ‘94 he liked master P and not Nas, doesn’t mean we should exile him. The fact that he has no idea who the GZA is kind of does. I mean, you can like Larry better than Magic, but if you don’t even know who Nique is, you’re not that much of a ball fan; and if you’re not a very good player either, what are you really offering to the game?

I can’t believe how bad Ciph was waxing this kid’s dick, fucking horrible. Worst Juan Ep ever.

O boy. Are you guys serious? Soulja Boy is from down south and he’s 18 what the hell do you want from him? I do think that you guys spent too much time on asking who he knows in hiphop. I was 16 when Nas dropped and 80 percent of my high school (I’m from Irvington NJ) didnt care or know who he was. It took “If I ruled the world” for anybody to know who he was and you expect a 18 from down south to know about Nas. I would say 90 percent of kids in Newark NJ don’t know about any of that but they know about everybody Soulja Boy named. Come on and realize that yall are offically old heads and our music is now Motown. I don’t know about you but I didn’t listen to Motown or know much about it when I was 18…lol.

Good Juan Ep, even though I can’t stand Soulja Boy’s music and don’t think it is hip hop, I don’t think Juan Ep should be limited to “honored” guests. After listening, is there any dispute as to the correctness of Ice-T’s statements? Lastly, for a guy who labels himself a music dude, i’m amazed by Cipha Sounds ability to dick ride anything “hot”, on the radio or making money regardless of how wack it is and his complete disinterest in anything “underground”. In my opinion, a true music dude doesn’t care where the music is coming from as long as its hot.

Soldier Boy is a true image of todays youth. Ignorant, ignorant, comfortable in their own dumbness, ignorant, ignorant, and all about money.
Difference is - Soldier Boy got mad mad money.
Only thing I don’t condone with is him always appearing on YouTube looking MAD dumb, talking MAD dumb “hotess rekord in Atlanna” type of talk, real dumbass dumb talk with no sense to it…plus…he always got that Arab dunny behind him.
And I’ve never seen no hoes. What the fuck is up with that?
Soldier Boy needs to get his hoe game up. He’ll be around 2 more years max and he will go bankrupt in 5-6 years, so yo he better get some business class poon before he starts banging ghetto hoodrats from Atlanna.

I don’t want to reiterate the recurring theme of these comments, but please stop gassing this guy up. Why is criticism called hate? Or is it because you have money people arent allowed to not like you?
I personally ‘hate’ SouljaBoy because he’s up there shucking and jiving to get famous. His taste in music isn’t what makes him wack (hell… look at the people who post here… technically WE’RE the minority when it comes to hip hop fans… so I’m sure Tribe lovers are wack to someone else)

I can understand why folks would think the kid is cooning and so forth. But I can’t be mad at him for not feeling hip hop that came out when he was 3,4 and 5 years old. I’m 27 and can’t listen to half of that era of hip-hop ie tribe, de la and so on. I think that usually the music you listen to as a teenager is the music that you tend to fall in line with. For me that was early wu and biggie and even the early cash money and no limit that he soulja boy spoke on. What I don’t get is why do folks hate (not hate on) but hate this kid so. He is a kid making kid music. Why doesn’t those kids that made that chicken noodle soup song catch as much flack? They weren’t any better. Is it because he was more successful at it or just because he is from the south? Chicken noodle soup and that bullshit Aunt Jackie song fall in line with crank that and white tee. And for the record I am not from the south. I’m in bmore.

Look doe, for this era of hiphop listeners (today’s youth), shit is just different, it pretty much breaks down like this:
1. dudes who only listen to what is “hot” (on Tv/Radio/Billboard/106 & Park crowd and all that)
2. dudes who listen to what’s being played around in their enviornment
3. dudes who really fall in love with it, so they open they ears to all types of hiphop, get in tune with it’s history, etc (which somebody like me fall, being 20 from the eastside of Detroit).
The problem is, because of this generation of the “hustler” rapper, dudes who fit into 1 & 2 got into the game. And its not a bad thing to see another black dude make it out from a negative enviornment to where he at. But you cant expect him to know shit about hiphop, so just view him as what he is and move on…
but yo lol, dude say “Ya Trick Ya, they switched my shit up. The orginal one was Ya Bitch Ya”…like really, that was some shit you hear in some comedy. At the end of the day, what I look for out of Juan EP is entertainment, this shit was comedy.

What Im scared about is, the youth that is growing up in this era right here, where the fuck is they minds going to be at when they get to a certain age?
The same way I grew up in the post Pac/Biggie era of DMX, Jay, Pun, Mase-era Bad Boy, Outkast, etc (which people looked down on at first, now hold in high regard)…this generation is growing up on Young Joc, Soulja Boy, etc.
What the hell is their view of hiphop going to be like?

A LOT OF RAPPERS IN THAT INTERVIEW WOULD HAVE LIED AND KISSED ASS ABOUT HOW MUSICALLY DIVERSED THEY ARE, BUT SOULJA BOY WAS COMPLETLY HONEST. HOW COULD YOU NOT RESPECT THAT? THE LOVE FOR MUSIC IS DEMOGRAPHICAL, HE LIKES MASTERP, GUCCI MANE & LIL BOOSIE BECAUSE WHAT HE CAN RELATE TO. HE CANT RELATE TO GZA ANYMORE THAN A 29 YEAR OLD CAN RELATE TO UTFO OR DANA DANE. im surprised he even bought illmatic, its funny that he didnt listen to it though. but i dont expect him to like the type of music i do.
y’all should pass him a burnt cd of some old wu-tang or gang starr and label it gucci mane or w/e the fuck and tell him its gucci’s old demo cd from before he got famous and i gurantee you he says he likes it just b/c its an artist he respects. it all about point of view.
btw i bet you he knows some old outkast since he’s from the south…

Hip-hop has to be, like, the only form of music in existence where the artists can not just be completely ignorant of the genre’s history, but BRAG about being completely ignorant of the genre’s history, and get away with it!
Imagine if a rock group gave an interview saying “Nah, son, we don’t mess with that ‘Beatles’, ‘Rolling Stones’ ish. We young. We not about that boring Bob Dylan stuff. We about that Linkin Park, that Creed, that Nickelback. We be ’bout makin’ dat money!”.
It’s like, hip-hop struggled for decades to be taken seriously as a legitimate form of music, and now we’ve gotten to the point where demanding, or even just expecting, any degree of artistry from it makes you a “hater” or a “dinosaur”.
Hip-hop today is straight Sarah Palin. The same way she panders to the lowest common denominator and champions the least educated, most bigoted of our citizenry as “The Real America”, hip-hop champions the most ignorant ish as being “Real”. And if you disagree, Palin calls you an “elitist”, Puffy calls you a “hater”.

^Feeling that last point and im gonna expand on that…..
What it comes down to in Hip Hop and Rap with this new Soulja Boy young generation of rappers and fans, is who’s passing down appreciation for what Hip Hop was to them and what they can identify with, and when it comes to ppl in the south or everywhere for that matter is, what influenced you the most, like Soulja Boy was born in 90 obviously he would be influenced by the early Cash Money stuff, No Limit, and T.I.’s Trap Muzik which was big in the south in 97′,98′, up to the early 2000s and he would have only been between the ages of 7 to 13 years old.
So you know maybe that was the only rap music he could indentify with and maybe he had no one to bring him that Nas Illmatic earlier or even some early Outkast say to him, yo this is what’s dope and you need to be listening to this, so I mean certain young people don’t identify with that golden age of Hip Hop 94-97′ because it’s not there era and in these times the media outlets such as radio & tv are don’t play or appreciate the old school, golden era 94-97′, and classic hip hop like other genres like the man said above. MTV, radio and BET was sooooo…..different in the 90’s Rap City played everything and it was like 2 hour show and who can forget Yo MTV Raps, where as music channels are now reality show central or only a place where mainly really popular top 40 music gets played, instead of being a vehicle for getting groundbreaking music out cause the internet is now bigger for that which is kind of retarted but it’s true.
One part of that is djs and radio program directors everywhere else but Hot 97 lol, in which I will give EBRO props for putting Rosenberg on there because he knows how to represent hip hop’s golden era with doing a throwback mix on the radio. But yeah, this new generation when it comes to hip hop you can blame it on a lotta things but these young n*ggas are lazy they’re not gonna do any research on older music it’s boring to them and they don’t understand that half of the music they hear in Hip Hop & R&B is samples from older music or interpolations of older stuff all they know is make wasteful music electronically on a computer with no soul or sense of making timeless music but mad props to the youngins on here that are 18-22 and you appreciate golden era of hip hop and real music that means you had somebody to guide you in the right manner about music and about what is dope.
But enough with my ranting and yes I am from south and back in the days you would hear the golden era hip hop (ie..nas,lost boyz, peterock&clsmooth, bootcamp, etc I got the cassette tapes to prove it!lol) on the radio down here, but again I think I’ve said enough. 100!

i saw this interview on youtube. i thought it was fake, but now that im on this website and seeing all this complainin, i have to say something.
im 27 years old and i came to realization that no matter what time it is whether the 1990s or the 2000s there will always be people complainin about how certain hip hop is wack and how its not what it used to be.
when tupac and biggie was living i remember people always complainin about how they were overrated. now people wanna call them the greatest of all time.
when wu-tang clan was popular i remember people talking about what the hell are they talking about and it doesnt make sense and how o.d.b. is retarded and annoyin. now people wanna say that 36 chambers is one of the greatest albums of all time and that o.d.b. is a legend.
i was a tribe called quest and pharcyde fan when i was younger i remember people were saying they sound too positive and they dont talk about real street shit. now people wanna say that a tribe called quest and pharcyde are classic.
speaking on that i remember when people didnt like jay dee aka j dilla. now people wanna call him the greatest producer of all time.
even with the south i remember when everybody used to say that no limit was the worst label of all time. now that you have soulja boy and shawty lo people now wanna say that no limit had some of the best down south music.
no wonder hip hop is dying because people cant even be honest with themselves. people said that hip hop was going wack in the 1990s and that the 1980s was the golden era but now people are sayin that hip hop is wack in the 2000s and that the 1990s is the golden era.
all yall people who say that soulja boy is garbage i wouldnt be surprised if you used to listen to vanilla ice or mc hammer. that is until people years later started calling them wack and then yall wanna get on the bandwagon.
you know whats going to be more sad. watch all the hate that ludacris is going to get for working with dj premier 9th wonder and black milk on his new album. i wouldnt be surprised if people complained about why is this commercial rapper workin with real hip hop producers he should stick to the club bullshit but yall complain at ludacris for doing that club bullshit.
to juan epstein
for the fact that this interview has received more comments than big daddy kane, q-tip, and large professor, it shows that yall need to continue to keep your guests open and not limited to just honored guests.
getback said it beat
