  8. Pete, as a sociologist, I have to say…this video did more to reveal what it is to be a white hip hop fan than any “real” study could. That Lil’ Wayne debate, I could write a book on. Kudos.

For the record: I bet all of the Rhymesayers including Slug and Brother Ali are FANS of Lil’ Wayne.

  9. 1) In my experience, as a black dude who grew up in the ‘burbs, white girls + hip-hop = a bad mix. Aside from the fact that a white girl trying to do hip-hop dances is some of the most painful shit in the known universe (I literally had to turn away from screen at the end of the video), they always seem to find ways to make the music sound incredibly lame.

“He’s the best rapper ever, the way he busts rhymes”

“I love him because he’s so real *tee hee*”

Honestly, there’s no way any vaginally-deprived individual would be able to get away with saying such lame shit.

    2) Pete, you let that Wayne-hater get under your skin a lil’ too much, to the point where you weren’t even making coherent arguments anymore. I understand why you rep Wayne so hard, aside from the fact that he is a talented dude. You don’t want to get caught up in that stereotype of being the elitist, granola-fied ivy league white boy who only likes Atmosphere and Sage Francis, arguably the doucheiest of all music snobs.

But still, don’t waste your time debating with people who aren’t even making legitimate points. How can you counter the statement “When I hear Wayne, I wish that my kids were dead”? Like Hov said, “A wise man once told me don’t argue with fools, ’cause people from a distance can’t tell who is who”.

Both had meh beats, so I deleted both after 1 listen.

But it’s obvious that as a rapper Slug > Lil Wayne. Not that either are anything great or close to be considered in the Top 10 or whatever, in terms of “if skill sold truth be told”.

Mofos need to listed to Black Thought on Roots’ “Rising Down” as an example reminder of what excellent rapping actually is. Do that & then try to keep justifying that the annoying voice, nonsensical phrase saying Lil Wayne is the “best rapper alive” (comedy!).

What’s next? Perhaps Akon is the “best singer alive”, or Keanu Reeves is the “best actor alive”? *smh*

and i’m not saying that becasue i disagree with you. i’m saying that becasue i’m a fan of both, they’re probably the best albums of 08, plus nas. i just don’t think that dissing the biased emo-rap white kids by being a biased mainstream old jewish dude is a big help to hip hop. for someone who promotes underground hip hop, and is while, you sure do find a lot of time to diss the shit out of underground white hip hop.

  16. Rosenberg is the same fagot that praised D4L for their “Brilliant lyrics” in Laffy Taffy. He put up a fight because it’s how he makes his living and if he said how he truly felt, that Lil’ Wayne is a dyslexic retard who has one tattoo per dick sucked, the elitist group of lethargic pioneers at Hot 97 would drop him. Lil’ Wayne’s songs make good club bangers because everyone’s too drunk to listen to his lyrics.

  20. It is an already proven fact. Hot 97 DJ’s receive payments and special gifts from the major record labels in exchange for radio play.

Dickriding wack records and wack artists goes hand in hand with jobs in radio. Ciph does it. Funkmaster does it. Martinez does it. Slowly Pete adapted to this and now look it has paid off well for him. Most of you would do the same thing he is doing so stop hating on him.

For those of you outside of New York who have been able to listen to the first few morning shows, now you understand how completely unlistenable Hot97 regular rotation is.

Everywhere in this country on corporate owned radio stations it is the same songs played over and over again. Hot97 not being broadcast over the web is a good thing. None of you are missing out on anything.

Hot97 where hip hop lives via by way of Indianapolis Indiana.

  22. Reality Talker, I know that. I lived in Queens til 2004, and even then all they would play is shitty songs 20 times a day. Looking back, there were terrible songs I loved only because they got so much radio play. When I moved to Florida, I realized that they play the same music on every station. Luckily, I heard the old school mix at 12 PM enough times (even though they mostly play shit like MC Hammer) to see the light before it was too late.

Anyway, I mentioned on Ciph’s site that I can’t listen to the morning show recordings in my car because it’s too difficult to skip past all the terrible songs. The dealbreaker was when they played the beat from Guess Who’s Back for about 3 seconds before playing their drop, then skipping to some terrible, awful, wack, plastic cookie cutter bullshit.

I guess I’ll just wait for the next ep of Juan Epstein. I mean, I’m happy to see you guys get paid and move up, but the music is just unbearable, especially when you go from One Mic to some Akon track. You’re playing with my emotions, dog.

Trust me, working in the music industry & being a DJ doesn’t make you any more of an authority on hip hop music than other cats who listen everyday. That’s because you can’t be objective (best rapper out) when the category is subjective. Moreover, if I had the opportunity to name better rappers than Wayne, I’d probably go with (1.) Black Thought (2.) Phonte (3.) Andre 3000 just for starters.

  47. Lil’ Wayne as the new face and forefront of hip-hop makes me feel a lil’ queazy. Almost as queazy as looking at myself in that video. We need to stop rapping about how ill we are. Those emo fags ruined rap? I’m not interested in putting myself into a group, I thought everyone was in this together. The bottom line is that the wrong rappers are getting recognized and famous. Yes you can be a sick rapper with a great flow and crazy word play, but save that music for the clubs and dance parties. Certain chosen mainstream rappers get popular and have the youth of the country in their hands and for the most part contribute to the dumbing of America. Don’t stop making the music, just step back and give the spotlight to someone with something to say.

I brought up Rhymesayers, because I believe what they are doing is inspiring. If there were more popular hip-hop acts like this, the music would get more respect. I’m not going to criticize Lil’ Wayne’s skill level or work ethic anymore, but we are so much better than this money first attitude. This is not Lil’ Wayne’s fault he is just a product of his environment.

I’m not concerned about who raps better than Lil’ Wayne. I will only argue about that when I am drunk.

I’m sorry to my future kids for such an outlandish remark.

i don’t think wayne’s about money over all else. if you listened to him you’d know differently. but alas, msot of the haters haven’t. they see the buzz, and they instantly reject. i’m the same way to a degree. i was doubting lil wayne’s status until i heard the record and the record is ill.

now peter’s my brother, and i think he went a little heavy with the carter iii is a classic talk, but that’s what peter’s like. he gets excited about shit and overstates the point. the fact of the matter is, that the carter iii is a really good album. good beats, good lyrics, charisma, and content.

now maybe i’m old and jaded, but i feel like if you don’t understand why wayne is famous, and rhymesayers and edan aren’t, you don’t really get why most people listen to music. not everyone are nerd rap music lovers like most of us posting here are. that’s important to keep in mind….

enough for now though. thanks everyone for their comments. sorry if i came off like a dick, but some outlandish ass shit was just flying around here with no backup. lil wayne couldn’t have ruined rap. nor could the combination of lil wayne, white girls and industry fucks. that’s some retarded shit to say no matter how you cut it. you won’t even be able to evaluate wayne’s impact for another year or 2, let alone decide he’s a factor in the destruction of rap. cmon fellas…think for a minute.

Get the fuck out of here.
I could gather a few crates of classic late 70’s and early 80’s New York hip hop and play those records for Pete.
Pete would show his true ignorance towards that era and show how his credentials and knowledge are limited to only mainstream Yo MTV raps radio friendly New York hip hop of the mid to late 80’s.
In reality there are tons of classic hip hop records which were released way before MTV ever jumped on board.
90% of them I guarantee you Pete would have no clue know about.
So Pete has a long way to go before he can legitimately start throwing his credentials around.

  52. Rosenberg come on you come from the Dilla school and you want to acknowledge little wayne as a stable rapper. the dude came from cash money where he was being saved by turk and bg. if you listen to all their ealry stuff produced by manny fresh to the hotboys stuff from the late 90’s and see and pay attention to his delivery you mean to tell me hes that great, the dude has ghost writers, come on need i remind you of guille the kid, ask ciph he knows. but come on now, the guy has no rhyme skills all he does is put lame metaphors together and that’s limited to what he plans on buying or how much bling he has, the guy has no originality no word play you cant hear wayne tell a story like nas or rahkim, so where is his talent. we have an over flaux of south music in the mainstream and its your job to have an open ear but quality over quantity. for as many mixtapes he has dropped, the mass overlooks the quality of material. and they are plenty of rappers out there waaaay better than wayne. not commercial but true to the game and that are just nasty, come on Nas,who is number 1 now in the charts, Ghostface, Buckshot, Sean Price, MF Doom, Blu the dude is amazing and i know you seen him a the show with wale you did, to say wayne is better than those dudes talent wise is a bold statement, he could be good for the commercial world but what is that doing ultimately. yeah you have a job but look at the sake of music. YOU have the power to save real music so put real shit on, you have the knowledge and power, but wayne, you need to listen to jesus price superstar and tell me that the carter 3 is better, cause if you think so pass that blunt.

Wayne is famous because he’s easily marketable and his lyrics are (mostly) about the same shit as everyone else: money, cash, and hoes.
Compare the first verse of A Milli by Lil’ Wayne to the first verse of Beauty by Edan:

    “A millionaire
    I’m a Young Money millionaire
    Tougher than Nigerian hair
My criteria compared to your career just isn’t fair
    I’m a veneareal disease, like a menstrual I bleed
Through the pencil and leak on the sheet of the tablet of my mind
Cuz I don’t write shit cuz I ain’t got time
Cause my seconds, minutes, hours go to the almighty dollar
And the almighty power of the ch ch ch ch chopper
Sister, Brother, Son, Daughter, Father Motherfuck a copper
Got the mazzerati dancin on the bridge pussy poppin
Tell the coppers hahahaha you can’t catch him you can’t stop him
I go by them goon rules if you can’t beat em then you pop em
You can’t man em then you mop em
You can’t stand em then you drop em
You drop em cuz we pop em like Orville Redenbacher
    I’m ill!!!!!”

    Beauty:

    “Well it’s the rap beautician
    The facts you listen
I blast through rhythms like hash through your system
    True in love and wisdom
    Well off and witty
Using God’s sleeve to wipe the hell off the city
See my elegance, dining on the periodic table called developments
    The universe designs my intelligence
Drop science down a bottomless pit
Run swift through a handstand on pyramid tips
The sun splits the waterfront causing prismatic effects
Butterflies come alive to have sex
Birds fly out of a top hat slow
To join the brilliance of wilderness and soar through the Congo
Speed the convo through colors and shapes
My word choice is turquoise I love to create
My art hurdles over the clouds of dark purple
Red mixes yellow and blue in sharp circles
Paint splashes over your conscious like canvas
Colors jump out of the body to form branches
    Psychedelic images flash like avalanches
Illustrate skill with the quill to build stanzas
    I use pens like hallucinogen
So who can pretend, my music ain’t a beautiful thing
    A suitable king
Deserving of the jewels and the rings
That only flatters my appearance like the tulips in spring
I’m cool with the gods, I could never use the facade
Of a musician that celebrate hate and abuse women
The beautician is back, Humble Magnificent wizard of rap
    Throwing tuxedos on the wax”

Edan and the Rhymesayers aren’t famous because they don’t dumb their shit down to double their dollars, as Jay-Z once said. The childlike shit Wayne says “hahahaha my maserati faster than dem copppers” wins over the masses because they understand the shit. The fucking amazing beats that are randomly dispersed across the album (Dr. Carter is a fucking David Axelrod loop. shit is motherfucking awesome) win over some of the underground heads. A lot of dope rappers who are 100% on their albums (I haven’t listened to the entire album all the way through yet, but Nas’ Untitled doesn’t contain any bullshit like Oochie Wallie, as far as I know) are impossible for me to listen to because they rap over incredibly bad beats.

Another thing Wayne does well is his swagger. All that charisma really helps people ignore what he’s actually saying just because of how he says shit.

Despite the fact that he is original and shows flashes of being a good rapper with his occasional nice wordplay and metaphors, he still relys on swagger and energy. He just isnt good at rapping kinda the same way people say tupac is the greatest rapper ever when he isnt at all good at rapping. There is no other way to say wayne(and tupac) are not good rappers besides that they simply aren’t good at rapping.

  59. What’s funny is that the Wayne and Edan verses quoted are essentially saying the same thing: “I’m nice”. Neither one is any more substantive than the other. The “money, cash, hos” cliche with mainstream rappers is paralleled in the underground with the “I’m true school, this is ‘real’ hip-hop, fuck the establishment” cliche.

People listen to music for two reasons: 1) to dance and party, and 2) because they relate to the content. “Get Money” may be perceived as a simple minded creed, but who can’t relate to the desire to do better and get more? Inversely, what can I really take away from a guy endlessly chanting “This is real hip-hop”, or drowning himself in esoteric, largely superfluous wordplay? I mean, I get it dude, you’re smart, but why should I really care?

Plus, even beyond that, delivery and charisma are so wildly important. When I was in high school, I was 100% on that whole “I only listen to lyricists, fuck all that commercial shit” underground, Co-Flo, late 90s Rawkus steez. But rap isn’t just spoken word poetry, it’s as much about voice and delivery and swagger as singing is. Q-Tip was never a great writer, but you can’t walk away from a Tribe song without remembering that voice. Busta Rhymes has never been a terribly substantive lyricist, but you can’t fuck with his energy and that legendary “Dungeon Dragon” delivery. Rappers who preform the hip-hop equivalent of shoegaze, standing there on the stage delivering breathless tirades of painfully earnest “real hip-hop”, don’t sell because they’re not musicians, they’re writers masquerading as musicians.

I’m not trying to shit on all “underground” hip-hop (though really, with the internet and acts like Aesop Rock and Atmosphere getting heavily promoted on MTV, what really qualifies anymore as “underground”?), but a lot of these guys simply lack the “it” factor. Being on an indie label isn’t an excuse for dull, rhythmless beats and awkward “ivy league white boy with a blaccent” deliveries.

  60. Edan sounds awkward? He’s almost indistinguishable from Insight on Science of the Two, although he did work some magic on both of their voices.

After using a shitload of imagery, describing scenes and colors, the dude says “I use pens like hallucinogen, so who can pretend my music ain’t a beautiful thing”

whereas Weezy is a millionaire tougher than Nigerian hair. He uses his money to buy dental ornaments and then shoots people. If he misses, he drives over them in his Maserati.

  61. Also, please provide examples of these “dull, rhythmless” indie beats.

  62. yo gambit…i respect the point your trying to make but its lost on me. you seem like the kids when i went to college who didn’t get why everyone didn’t want to listen to 17 minute phish songs. you think that shit made by artists with more ‘artistic integrity’ is inherently better than shit made by commercial artists. that simply is just not true. granted, its true a lot of the time, but its not true all of the time.

the fact that you keep saying wayne only talks about money, hoes, car, etc. demonstrates that you don’t know what you’re talking about. notice that i’m not making any generalizations about the shit that edan and rhymesayers talk about because generally i don’t listen to it (though that ’sing it shitface’ joint was crazy!). that shit is probably pretty good though. i like what i’ve heard of rhymesayers (brother ali’s first album was pretty cool).

one more thing, from what i know of rhymesayers and edan, i bet you they would never make the argument that they are nicer than wayne because i’m pretty sure that they are nothing like their fans tastewise. those dudes are real hip hop dudes who get it…

  63. Here’s another example of an album I feel is very close to 100% dope (the only exception being 00:32 to 02:07 of track 6):

  64. i listen to music mostly because i like to listen to it, not because i like to party to it or because i relate to it..swagger is a factor, but lil wayne relys on it which makes his delivery sound bad

  65. Wow, this video led commentators to get into an argument involving a Edan vs Lil’ Wayne? Word?

I’ll give you a topic: Hell Rell > Lil’ Wayne. Discuss. (Better add some more server space PMD if you plan on arguing about Weezy in every video/recording.)

  66. I like Edan better than Slug on records (fumbling over words that rhyme is insane) but Atmosphere is one of the best liveacts in hip hop.

Reality Talker: Tell me about the tons of hip hop 12’s that were made in the 70’s then, I bet you have an awesome playlist.

  69. Tha Carter III is disposable handi-wipe hip-hop. It’s like McDonalds. Tons of advertising, lots of $$$ spent on hype and presentation, but in the end, you feel hollow inside and unfulfilled.

It’s not the worst stuff ever, but it’s just not that great.

    Time will prove me right.
