I think the problem with hip hop exposes itself in this episode with MCA. You guys are talking to one member of one of the greatest hip hop groups of all time and don’t know a thing about their music. If the hip hop heads would not be close minded and expand and venture into other musical genres, then hip hop could keep progressing. Do you think that Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones only listened to rock and roll. Of course not, they were based around the blues. In addition, half your samples for most hip hop songs are blues based or rock based. Cipha, that band your high school buddy mentioned, Led Zeppelin, think about how many hip hop songs are sampled from Led Zeppelin. Cipha, how can you say you dont want to listen to that, half the hip hop records you listen to originate from there. Open your minds to new things, dont be that close minded New Yorker. Someone has to keep the ball rolling for hip hop and you guys are in a position to do so. Otherwise we will be left with ringtone rap forever. Rosenberg you sounded like a retard. Especially being a white boy from the burbs, you should know every beastie record, its like an introduction to hip hop. Educate yourself.
You know there used to be a time in New York when you could go see a Grandmaster Flash show, a Bad Brains show, a Blondie show, and a Beastie show with all kinds of ethnicities and cultures coming together for the same reason to enjoy good music. Nowadays everything is so categorized. Nothing blends anymore. It’s too individualized. We have taken a step back in our integration. Rosenberg and Cipha, how do yall feel about this?
Especially talking about being way openminded but then saying that by definition you should know every Beastie record (apparently even the ones they themselves think are crap) because you’re white and from the suburbs?!
And half of hiphop samples are NOT rock and blues samples, cause that would only leave the other half for r’n'b, soul, reggae, jazz and every other genre out there that’s also went through the samplers. I’d say James Brown and the JB’s are responsible for more samples by themselves than pretty much all rock groups combined. Listen to Led Zep if you like them, or if you like the way Last Emperor flipped them on Heavy Weight Invinsible, listen to that instead.
I thought it was a great interview, and I especially enjoy the fact that Ciph always makes every guest be really specific about New York geography. It really ties the city together so keep doing that.
