  4. I respect dude’s opinion, but I STRONGLY disagree with him as far as Nas…

To me, Nas is the reason why I want to be experimental in my music whether the public agrees, disagrees, etc. I know that a lot of people give Nas questions that he can’t answer well, but I can relate to him cause he’s not that type of dude. I think people expect or want him to do what Jay-Z, 2Pac, OutKast, 50 Cent, and others did successfully outside of music to bring those back to the music… but he’s not that type. I believe that Nas is totally misunderstood outside of music, and since he released Nastradamas, that misunderstanding has been effecting how people see his music.

Peter even said it himself when he compared Dilla’s legacy to Pac by saying that most who are experimental tend to lose or confuse people, and that’s Nas… but I don’t think Nas cares if you’re lost or not… he just wants you to hear the music and see something new.

We can’t go back to 93 because technology is totally different to where you can even get the same vibe or sound. For example, I heard a lot of people say that Little Brother is taking it back, but to me they’re not taking it back… they’re taking it AHEAD to what’s out now. The difference is that they are more down-to-earth in their sound than somebody like Outkast or Common… but that’s another story.

What I would tell Nas is to not forget where you came from as far as hip hop… you can at least have one joint that brings people back to your foundation… even OutKast still have at least one Organized Noise track (producers of Southernplayalistic) on every album, but still takes it AHEAD and not back.

It’s interesting that people wants all of Nas’ albums to sound like Illmatic but when somebody like Pac does most of his albums the same… people complain that Pac isn’t doing anything new. That’s why Eminem fell off because he’s stuck in that “Eminem Show” sound. Hopefully Em will do something new on “King Mathers”.

Either way. people are going to complain, but personally, I rather have people talk about me badly that people not talk about me at all.

FYI: This is my opinion. Hate it or love it…

PMD: You that dude, fuck these critics, keep doing your thing… just be careful with your choice of words (Remember the “DC Music sucks” situation).

  5. Correction: “DC Radio sucks” situation when you said “DC Radio sucks for local artists…” but the DC newspapers quoted you just saying “DC Radio sucks”, and you got fired from the DC radio stations. Anyway, Peter… if you need some assistance as far as getting the Atlanta area to hear you and your website, get at me. It is a different world down here… LOL.

  9. How can you be overrated when you make the BEST record (Illmatic) in music period. I listen to all types, Rock, Jazz, etc, so i know exactly what i am talking about. Plus the next 2 albums after that were some of the best records created till this day.

NYOIL; i saw him on cnn on the red carpet to the grammys. He said exactly what needed to be said. So i really don’t know what you’re talking about. Even Khelis said something about women being the ‘Niggers’ of the world,

You are right, you are allowed to say whats on your mind and i respect that, but please keep that bafoolary in private if its not fact. You might as well say Biggie was overrated because he wrote all his rhymes high!

Theres nothing worse than a bitter artist shittin on another artist who is a bit controversial. You calling him one of the illest but yet you’re saying hes overrated. Thats just the worst.

I understand why people hate the nas’s and jays of the world because everyoooone puts them up in a pedestal, but is it really their fault?!, Real recognize real. If their music is the best out there then recognize it no matter who jocks them.
Im pretty sure nas made that ‘nigger’ record for the ignorance thats out there i.e this interview

Rosenberg you’re losing points just for giving dude a voice.

And no im not a Nas fan or nothing like that, im a tribe fan, so dont get it twisted if you think my opinions are biased. Im a 19 year old dominican with a passion and love for music, especially old school hip hop. The era that i missed and now embracing.

  10. I’m losing points for giving him a voice. NY Oil has a voice without me. He was a member of a great group (The UMCs) and he makes great music now. Listen to his music before you say anything and also listen closely to his critique of Nas.

You could make the case that Nas is a major disappointment. Since Illmatic (which is not the greatest album of all time –its PROBABLY a top 5 hip hop album)–his career has struggled at many points. In fact–every album since Illmatic has been pretty spotty. Nas is GREAT, but he still has something to prove. And let’s not forget –his last album was ALSO a gimmick title that turned out to be kind of disappointing.

  11. argreins be easy homie you tryina bring 88 back when you was born in 87 (c) kidz in the hall (on the tanya morgan record)

bottom line NYOIL is a ill n*gga — respect his pedigree, b

nas is unfortunately blinded by his niggotry right now but hopefully he’ll get his mind right soon

finally don’t tell paul he’s losin points for giving NYOIL a platform, this jew loves hip-hop from the heart and because of that the internets love him, your boy chea included (i put the whole windy city on to this cat)

big ups to THNB (aka The Hebrew Nature Boy) — i approve this message — WOOOOOOOOOOOO! (c) cocca, paul, and ric flair

  12. the fact is nas hasnt made a overall solid album since “it was written” which was 12 years ago.

He had one hot single in 98 “nas is like” thanks to premier which forced nas to bring it hard.

Nas is the biggest dissapointment in hip hop it’s almost like when Jordan came back wearing the 45 jersey and he almost became a parody of himself trying to live off his rep.

Difference is Jordan prooved it once again and brushed off the dust and trained and came back with th3 23 and murdered 3 more championships….

Nas needs the 23 back which is premo, pete rock, large pro, q tip etc…he should take a huge chance and gather all illmatic producers and do an updated brand new album with the original people with there updated styles….its not bringing it back its moving forward with tradition kinda like shawn michales and flair in recent wrestlemania..one would think the match sounds dated but the magic it brought lit the whole house up…

    true indeed | Apr 24, 2008 | Reply

  13. I was born in 88 =), And i dont see how im trying to ‘bring back 88′, Im just saying what is being presented in front of me.

Rosenberg, i have heard of the UMC’s. In fact i’ll play ‘One to grow on’ while i make my point.

You are a DJ at a major radio station. So no matter what! you’re going to get ears, Meaning that if you hadn’t posted this video than his words would be ignored and come across as another bitter artist who is past his hay day talking about a relevant artist with a controversial new album. I’ve always been taught to get as much information and to look at all the angles before making an opinion.

Its basic hip hop 101, if you’re at the bottom of the Scrotum pole (HAHA) you shouldn’t bag on the guy on top, unless you’re ready to take the crown from nas. Especially when you haven’t heard his message which is to not give a word so much power.

I really don’t undertand whats going on. I hear all the time how hiphop isn’t the same, how its been commercialized and ‘how everyone has changed’, how the soulja boys of the world are the ones getting radio play, and ‘how these people do nothing but take advantage of the game’. But when one of hip hops legends makes an album called “hip hop is dead” than it comes off as a ‘gimmick’. smh. Im sorry but 50 getting ’shot 9times’ says that sounds ridiculous.

And i apologize if my paragraphs come out a bit incoherent.

    Argreigns | Apr 24, 2008 | Reply

  14. WTF is Rosenberg talking about? Hip Hop Is Dead was an excellent Nas album. Good beats, & Nas’ unique lyrics were very interesting & insightful, taking a long view of time. It’s like Nas has the wisdom of a grandpa even though he’s a young man.

“dope beats dope rhymes, what more do yall want” (c) Phonte

  15. BTW, I wonder who NYOil is a fan of, if he “doesn’t eff with Nas like that”. Rosenberg should’ve asked what artists, if any, “does NYOil eff with [||]”

For all Nas’ blunders like his 2 wack 1999 albums, Nas still has 1 of the best discographies in rap history. Who else has made as many or more good albums than Nas? The list is short, a few artists like ATCQ, The Roots, De La Soul, Jay-Z, Kweli, Common, OutKast, Scarface, Little Brother/Foreign Exchange, maybe 10 others at most.

  16. argreigns–

the notion that there is a hip hop totem pole and you can only criticize down the pole is the most stagnating stupidity i have ever heard.

now granted, nyoil should be prepared to hear it from people, but to dismiss him out of hand because he’s down the totem pole and didn’t follow some made up hip hop code is lunacy.

by that same logic, peter shouldn’t comment on charlie gibson and stephanapoulous’s performance at the debate because they are more successful journalists than he is. fucking stupid.

  18. YO, rosenberg, you heard about this cop acquital shit?

    MILES DAVIS CAT | Apr 25, 2008 | Reply

  19. Lunacy?!

There is such a thing ‘Bsidewinzagain’. Its the same totem pole that keeps names like biggie and pac alive and in the mouths of the generation that missed their music.

You people misconstrued the whole point of “speaking out”, If your point is “he has a right as a man to speak out on what he believes” then you can “CRAM IT UP YOUR CRAM HOLE, LAFLEUR” Its one thing to have an opinion but its another to speak out of ignorance and misunderstanding. I MEAN HE HAS A RECORD TELLING RAPPERS THEY’RE COONS AND SUGGESTING THEY SHOULD GET LYNCHED, you can say that but you can’t say “Stop letting the word nigger define who you are or let it get to you if you’re called one” Its just unnecessary to say something about a man who can run lyrical circles around you. Thats like a homeless person saying trump sucks at life.

And as to your example about peter and the performance at the debate by the 2 journalist. He can comment on that because it came and it went, he was able to conclude and say “you know what, this debate was effin corny and they did a piss poor job”.

What Kool kim did was call arguably one of the hip hops best MCs overrated and pretty much questioned his legacy. Am i the only one that thinks that crazy?!

p.s idk how fixing the obvious wrong here makes me a stan… i really don’t. People shit on nas because of Nastradamus and I am…, which were weak albums (production wise). HHIP can also be included there if you think he did it for sales. But how can you make an album for sales only if you can’t sell one unit unless you’re dancing, wearing 5x Ts, and/or repeating a misogynistic reference.

Im tired of you dudes who skip songs because the beat “isn’t iight yo”. Its never about the lyrics anymore. Meanwhile people like Joe buddens sit on the shelves or don’t get a chance to release in fear of not selling.

    Thanks for the rant.

  20. I’m a Nas fan thru and thru. Between his lyrics and Wu-tangs is what attracted me to rap music. I used you hear rap music but after these two I listened to it*. but I do believe people blindly follow everything he does. We all know that when you do an album you have to do some bullshit tracks to get the record company off of you. Because whenever you hear ruff copies of his albums or songs that didnt make it you wonder why it doesnt end up like that. But about his new song. I think it makes an OK opener for his album.

why does it seem like his voice is mega slow for this song.

  21. I gotta add my two cents. Nas one of the greatest lyricists ever hands down—NYC Oil needs to recognize that, but NYC Oil got one thing right: Nas got gassed from the his own hype and that’s led some of the unevenness of his post-Illmatic efforts. Nas is at his best when he’s just being a regular cat rapping about the streets—the ghetto CNN (like on Illmatic and the best cuts off of God’s Son). But presumably because of all the hype from his first album, Nas felt the need to create corny Pac’ inspired personas: “Esco” the super gangster (in the words of Jay Z: “we don’t believe you, you need more people”), the intellectual revolutionary (he comes off as stupid a lot of the time, like when he shouted out “Che Gravera, a famous revolutionary killed by his own government”), and the sex symbol (no one wants to hear the details of your sexual escapades).

  22. I think NY makes a valid point about Nas’s in regards to him really not standing FIRM (no pun intended) about too much of anything. He’s always been on the fence about most things throughout his career in my opinion. With that said it still hasn’t stopped me from holding him in the highest regard with the likes of Melle Mel, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, KRS, Biggie & PC. These people made you change the way you rapped and lived Hip-Hop so you can’t front on that. Oil is my ninja, we have a joint together called Black Superman that’s crazy(shameless plug) but I sense a bit of hater in his undertone. Let me explain, simply due to the fact that he DOES stand for something and doesn’t fall for anything so to see Nas take a political stands and not really stand behind it is a bit frustrating. I get the same feeling when I thought he was Muslim because he talked it so much then see him with a cross on his neck (not a JC bash, it’s just confusing) so I feel NY’s pain. The two need to connect and show unity especially at this point where what & how much you have takes precedence over what you believe in your heart. They could be very strong allies if they see the bigger picture. Peace!
