10 Candid Minutes with Prodigy

 prodigy_mobb.jpg

People love to take shots (no pun intended) at Mobb Deep–Prodigy specifically. That’s fine, I guess. The Infamous is still one of the greatest things ever to happen to Rap music. And Prodigy’s solo career has been pretty stellar as well. “Return of the Mac” may have been the most slept on album last year and HNIC 2 is sounding like it may be almost as classic as 2000’s HNIC. Last night, in a smoke-filled room backstage at BB Kings in Times Square, Prodigy and I talked about his quickly approaching 3 year stint for a gun charge and the making of The Infamous. Sunday’s show will include this interview and a special Mobb Deep throwback.

  1. Hav & P are two of my favorites (gotta throw in Rapper Noyd, the unofficial 3rd member). Trust me, for a dude from Brooklyn to really feel (pause) some dudes from QB, they gotta be on some thug ish. Once they made Infamy, by the 2nd half of the album, they fell off. Since then, P’s been mad unfocused. I didn’t feel Return of the Mac, but I’m hoping HNIC 2 is a return to form. 3 year bid? Damn. On some Shyne ish.

  5. I know I will get cussed out for this by someone, but one of the greatest things to happen to rap? Damn that’s a serious claim, I guess it depends if you separate and specifically delegate certain differences from rap and hip hop because I think they are different. 90’s infamous mobb was definitely ill, well actually maybe only like 2 albums, but for sure hip hop coulda survived well without them, they weren’t vital to the game like certain cats. but he straight got what he deserved, and no one even talks about Shyne who been fucking locked up for 8 years doin a 10 year bid, so reallt they aint no reason to fret over soft 3 year shit. That ain’t nuthing. Things change in 3 years?… what about 10 years? Faggot diddy and his money ruined Shyne’s life, P will get through it, just like pimp c and beanie and jah cure etc,. there are plenty people locked up fo shit they didn’t do so. this is well deserved. you can’t compare this to shyne, shyne got fucked by protecting pussy ass diddy whose fault the whole thing was cuz cats came and shot at him and shyne was protectin the dude he thought was his boy, who turned out to be a pussy ass bitch, Shyne shot in self defence while diddy hid like a bitch and ran away. And the trial was ridiculous, money runs the justice system. Shyne’s a G and is innocent, he ended up being a scapegoat for the biggest pussy alive who he thought was his mentor, but diddy pimped him out. it’s fucked up. that situation pisses me off , injustice pisses me off.

  8. some responses…

the song is “vic flair” by rustee juxx from boot camp…

mobb deep is one of the best things in MY history of hip hop..i cant speak for everyone but if you love raw gangsta new york hip hop–you grew up on G Rap, etc–Mobb Deep is one of your favorite groups. The Infamous and HOE were both incredible in different ways. The Infamous was pretty epic in terms of 90s NY hip hop (Prodigy’s continued fame and support are proof) and Hell On Earth was dark, scary, and awesome.

I don’t think anyone is saying Prodigy didn’t deserve jail time. I think people just think it sucks. Mobb has made good music in every era since the early 90s. Who else has done that? Snoop, Dela, Common, Dre (with some serious breaks in there)..They’re elite

the weather in NY sucks..thanks for asking, though South Padre Island Texas…thanks for the support down there

  9. I’d say Nas, Scarface, Ghostface Killah and to some degree Fat Joe have held it down at least as good consequetively.

Good interview though, and good to hear P is optimistic about the stint. I saw the Mobb when they performed in Denmark and had just recorded “Cobra” with Alchemist. Hav, P, Al and Twin were all running around the stage doing air cobra-clutches.

    Good stuff!

  14. Black Thought >> Ballerina P

    The Roots >> Mobb Deep

I recall how Rosenberg shitted on Black Thought in a prior blog post, saying mediocre annoying-voice having Lil Wayne was better than Black Thought. WTF?!

Rosenberg’s general comments on politics, life, etc >> Rosenberg’s taste in rap music

So that’s why Juan Epstein >> the Rosenberg radio show
