Two Years Without Dave…
By pmd on Jan 24, 2008 in Life |
Dave Ellis was more than a friend. He was more than a coworker at WMUC in College Park. He was the ultimate hip hop head and truly one of the best human beings I’ve ever known. I’m not a religious guy, but I thank God that I got to spend time with Dave Ellis. He will always be a part of everything I do in hip hop. He died two years ago today in a fire that should have never happened, but will probably happen in another college town soon, because some borderline slumlords bend rules to make money off of kids who are living in unsafe conditions. I love you Dave. See you on the flip side, homey…
This is a wonderful tribute done by Haysoos of Wade Waters and Kenn Starr. 9th Wonder gave me the beat on the strength simply because I told him about Dave and how much Dave lived for true hip hop. Thanks 9th…

What up paul…I just posted this at my site: hiphopupdate.blogspot.com
Crazy world….I used to chill with D.Ellis when dude was scoopin me ice cream or whatever at the Maryland Dining Hall. Used to party and just kick it talkin bout nothing but hip hop. Last time I saw him was at the Kanye West/ Skillz concert at UMD.
Next time I heard about him, the terrible tragedy happened
Dave was one of the realest, kindest people I’ve known and a true lover of hip hop.
RIP D.Ellis

What’s going on Mr. Rosenberg, I have been meaning to get at you for years now. I “run” sumish.com now, trying to keep it alive in memory of Dave. I’ve known the guy since I was a kid, and he is the dude who gave me Hip-Hop and my eventual career path.
I just wanted to thank you for reaching out to 9th like you did, the tribute track means a lot to Dave’s friends and family.
Hit me up @ sumishdotcom@gmail.com when you can.
peace bro.

How I know about D. Ellis is crazy….
I remember back sumish.com was just a page on some random server space (say like ‘98-’99) and it was just D ranting and raving. Though I never met him in person, he was cool enough to respond to the emails. What I liked about his page (which as I recall originally went by the full Sum Sh-t I Wrote) was that he wrote about anything on his mind that whether it was whack women, whack NBA jeans, or whack rappers. Remember when he had that honey of the week thing? D. Ellis was like the original blogger (as far as I can remember). Every time this guys site would go down, he’d always have a new site up, which eventually evolved into the present sumish.com. Thinking back to all of this got me walking down memory lane now. Pete great job with the tribute man! RIP Big D

Says: thats a great memory
I’ve had a bunch of conversations with him on exactly the same stuff…useless conversations but dude always spoke his mind even in person. The funny thing about it was he was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met - but very blunt. When my boy at maryland sent me the link about the fire it was just surreal to me…

Good look on the tribute. I was mad for a min when i seen a Heath Ledger tribute but not our homeboys. As D Ellis would say it’s too real in the street for that. Shout to everyone that made the song happen and to everyone that still remembers.

I understand how you feel 100% because when you lose a really good friend it sucks. My boy Disco D died one year ago and it still bothers me to this day. Sometimes I wish that things didnt happen the way they did but I guess God has a purpose for everything he does. If you have time take a listen to the tribute song I wrote for my boy
