The Lupe Fiasco Fiasco Continues..
By pmd on Oct 9, 2007 in Hip Hop |

Well the Honors aired last night and the drama surrounding Lupe dropping the ball while honoring Tribe on national TV has picked up some steam. I didn’t know anyone cared about this besides me. Apparently, Phonte from little brother agreed with your boy Rosenberg. Here is Phonte’s breakdown of the situation mixed with Lupe’s written defense for the incident in bold….
Tay makes some great points. He doesn’t argue that often, but when he does, he does it well–and cats generally lose. Lupe’s justification was pretty weak to me. I’m not saying we need to crucify the dude for life–I’m just saying he was very corny. And he already lacked personality to me–so now he’s uncharasmatic and an asshole. Talk about missing out on lessons from Kanye. If you’re gonna be an arrogant asshole–you better be really fucking charismatic.
Phonte (of Little Brother) with Lupe’s defense to the incident in bold :
What’s even more amazing is the same cats on this site defending your arrogance and ignorance on this topic are the same ones who would be ready to FLIP if the statements you made about MM were said by a Webbie, Plies, or Soulja Boy.
I purposely remained silent during Fiascogate just to see how it all would play out and to see how my man would gain control of the situation, but with you forgetting the lyrics to a classic song from a classic group on national television while paying tribute to them, the 2nd plane has officially hit the tower.
You’re my homeboy and a colleague that I hold in high regard. I’m a fan of your work. Even moreso, we’ve chopped it up on numerous occasions so you know that everything I say is coming from a place of respect and concern:
>”I DID NOT GROW UP ON ATCQ!!!…”
>THE LITTLE GHETTO KID FROM THE MEAN STREETS OF THE WESTSIDE OF
>CHICAGO GREW UP ON SPICE 1, 8-BALL & MJG, NWA AND SNOOP
>DOGG…
That’s fine, but your music and more importantly your image leans more towards Native Tongues than killaman-killaman-saykillamankillaman-wit me glock. If it walks and talks like a duck, most people would call it one. You can’t blame OKP’s or anybody else for putting you inside a box that you were willing to sit comfortably in and benefit from (see: Diamonds, American Terrorist, Daydreaming, I Gotcha).
>I WASNT A BACKPACKER RAP ENTHUSIAST!!!…I NEVER CLAIMED TO
>BE…I GREW UP ON GANGSTA RAP!!!
I have several problems with the term ‘backpacker rap,’ but okay. However, if you truly grew up on gangsta shit and it was a big influence on you, you should do more Pop Pop’s and less Dumb It Down’s to help your listeners understand that.
>HAVE I LISTENED TO MM IN ITS ENTIRETY?…NO!!!…(Sorry
>Quest)…
This statement is nothing but pure arrogance. I wonder how your friend Q-Tip would feel about you ‘having no interest’ in hearing what many consider to be his landmark album….especially after you forgot his lyrics during a tribute and your only defense is, “hey, shit happens……but I still ain’t listening to the album tho…”
>GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSES AND YOUR SACRED COWS…SOME OF YA’LL
>MAKE ME SICK…
I’m an artist so I understand how we all go through our times of arrogance and flat out niggotry, but seriously, now is not the time for this. You had a fuck up and there’s really no one to blame but yourself.
>AND FYI WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY OFFERED TO ME I TURNED IT DOWN
>BECAUSE I FELT IT WAS OUT OF PLACE FOR ME TO BE HONORING THEM
>BECAUSE WHILE I WAS FULLY AWARE OF THEIR IMPACT IN HIP-HOP I
>WASNT REALLY AWARE OF THEIR MUSIC LIKE THAT…BUT GUESS WHO
>WANTED ME TO BE APART OF IT….HMMMM…HOW
>ABOUT…Q-TIP!!!…
>
>SO NOW ARE YOU GOING TO HATE ON “ATCQ” BECAUSE THEY WANTED
>SOMEBODY WHO DIDNT REALLY KNOW THERE MUSIC TO HONOR THEM BY
>COVERING SOME OF THEIR MUSIC?…THINK ON THAT OKP’S
Tip was covering his ass.
More than anything, it seems to me that Tip knew you were one of the only available celebrities that would translate to VH1’s audience and do his legacy justice.
Kanye is in the stratosphere right now. The LB’s, Tanya’s, Kidz, and Strange Fruit’s of the world are nobodies on a mainstream level. You and Pharrell are the only celebrities who are (seemingly?) cut from Tribe’s cloth and would make sense in the context of the show.
>P.S. I FORGET THE WORDS TO SOME OF MY OWN SONGS ON STAGE…HEY
>IT HAPPENS…
Normally cats would be forgiving of a slip up, but when that slip-up was preceded by several months of bragging about how ‘I’ve never heard the album and really don’t care to,’ well……you do the math.
Just some words of concern, fam.
Best of luck with “The Cool” and I hope the remix comes out dope.
Your Homie, Peer, and Fan,
Tigallo

I still don’t see what the big deal is…
Why is everybody jumping on my boy Lupe? Give him a break. He said he didn’t grow up on ATCQ. So how come we all expect him to replicate a flawless verse?
In general, it’s kinda elitist to say “Oh, you didn’t grow up on Tribe? Oh, so you must be wack!”
I myself didn’t even grow up on Tribe. It wasn’t until the age of 15 or so that I actually heard one of their songs in entirety.
And why do we assume that since Lupe is a “backpacker” he MUST be a Tribe fan. Aren’t we trying to eradicate Hip-Hop’s polarity? Instead what that does is intensify it.
Lupe “the backpacker” grew up on Gangsta rap just like I “the backpacker at heart” grew up on Gangsta rap. The first rap song I can remember hearing was Nuthin But a G Thang back in the early 90’s (I was born in ‘87), and the first rap song to make a lasting impression on me was Coolio’s performance of Gangsta Paradise on the Grammys. That was my plunge into the rap world, and the basis for my quest to learn more about it. More or less, Lupe’s coming from the same angle. So why do we have to criticize him for being true to himself?
Plus when did he ever say anything to disrespect Tribe?
This sh*t is gettin’ blown outta proportion IMO…

OMG…… They is lettin’ Lupe have it in the ass….. Lupe better calm down and listen to Midnight Marauders…. and show some decency when he speaks…. and take responsibility for his slip up as well…

The funny thing is Lupe defenders have all missed the mark in terms of what people are annoyed about. Not everyone who’s 19 now would be a fan of Tupac, Biggie or Tribe. However, if anyone of that age to perform their music in tribute, they’d learn it. They might even listen to some of it. I don’t care if Lupe never listens to any Tribe album. Know lyrics when you get onstage or apologize for your mistake, even if its a small one. Simple. Since when did growing up on gangsta rap make other types of hip hop irrelevant? I grew up on Run DMC, Wu-Tang, Special Ed, Tribe, JBs and all types of hip hop. I listen to Little Brother, Talib Kweli & UGK. One of my favorite groups of all time is Mobb Deep, yet I’ve never shot anyone in my life. Does that make Slum Village irrelevant to me? Its true, this probably doesn’t even deserve the attention its getting b/c Lupe’s never moved me much but he’s really sounding stupid.

This man making up bold lies bout Q-Tip beggin him to do this shit against his will. Fuck outta here. Tip fully made a statement how he never asked him shit, Lupe lost with this one. It would of been fine if he just admitted to his mistake and kept it movin, but faggot had to come on some arrogant bold face lie shit. So fuck him. I was feelin the dumb it down track and I never liked any of his shit before that but this show of his character confirms I will not support any of his shit in the future and can’t wait for Tip to drop in Feb. That is all.

Also, I really need to big up Phonte on the statement made cuz that is just proper. I co-sign with him 100%. And I damn well need GETBACK to come out NOW. That Weezy and LB track is a somewhat surprisingly ILL collab and 9th just did it up nice (Anyone cop Dream Merchant 2?). I heard Erick Sermon was kind of pissed about not being honored, but does he really need VH1 to tell him he’s hip hop?.
co-sign 100 with Rosenberg on a fund for the cats being honored, it just makes sense.
Rosenberg for Mayor of Hip Hop.
That is all.

aside from all the valid points that have been made its worth mentioning that Lupe was just fucking unprofessional to fuck up.
If you’d didnt know the track would you not make an effort to LEARN THE WORDS??!! Regardless of how well known the track is just take the time to rehearse and prefect it. Thats what musicians do.
Rappers these days seem more concerned with sponsorship, clothing lines and filming childish youtube videos.
Particularly stupid of Lupe to fuck up he’s an artist who is seemingly desperate to crack that mainstream audience that Kanye & Pharell etc have buying their tunes.
its unlikely a rock act would have fucked up like that when it was being recorded for an international audience.
