Some Hip Hop Honors Notes
By pmd on Oct 5, 2007 in Hip Hop |
** There were a lot of hot and random chicks at the Hip Hop Honors
** There were far too many self important and overly comfortable white people at the Hip Hop Honors.
** The biggest response of the night was hands down Busta Bus coming out to do his verse from scenario. The shit was insane. And ladies–don’t worry–Busta traded in those ugly muscles for a large handsome gut.
** Lupe–if you’re honoring a group–LEARN THE FUCKING WORDS TO THE SONG!!! Seriously–that is the least cool place to forget words on stage. And my mom knows all the words to “Electric Relaxation”. Seriously–as 50 said to me–”are you retarded?!” If Common, Pharrell, and Busta can remember their words–so can you hot shot.
** On a serious note– I had no idea Phife was sick. Apparently he has a serious kidney issue and it must be bad because he really looked ill. It was very upsetting to see. He still rocked, but they clearly cut their set short to avoid any problems.
** Fat Man Scoop and his wife should be an intergender tag team. They’d be unstoppable.
** Director Chris Robinson is a gentleman and a scholar–and he’s from Maryland.
** I saw Parish Smith. He said EPMD is SERIOUS about their new record.
Overall the Hip Hop Honors weird me out for so many reasons. It’s like this huge trendy event with EVERYONE from the hip hop industry–yet no one actually supports this music anymore. It’s nice that we honor Whodini, but it would be even nicer to throw em some of the money they deserve for cats like Young Joc getting to have careers for no reason. You have all these fancy white people who don’t love hip hop walking around like they belong there. It’s just weird. That said–it was a damn good show. Check it out when it airs on Sunday night on VH1.

Damn son! - I was there last night and I agree w/ you on several counts:
1. There were MAAAD chicks out last night w/ their breasts spilling out of their dresses. Great Look.
2. There were MAAAD white people with the HHH laminates looking overly important and extremely annoying.
3. Lupe lost any cool points that he may have had and any that he potentially could have gained in the future. HE FORGOT THE WORDS TO THE SONG THAT HE WAS PERFORMING AS A TRIBUTE!!! and it was lyrics to ATCQ joint. Shameful and Disgraceful. He gets zero love until he dies and we bury him wearing his trendy overpriced sneakers.
* One thing you forgot to mention. Jazzt Joyce’s spinning at the intro was terribly WACK. She played like 8 down south instructional dance joints in a row and played R7B mixed with the latest commercial trash at an event to honor Real Hip-Hop.

What’s crazy is that’s the EXACT reason this music is going to rot!!!!!…..Everybody wants to be seen these days…whether they stand for something or not!….And as far as Lupe’s concerned…..fame is getting to the kid!!!! He’s on some, “me rehearse…I’m Lupe”, shit!….I wonder what will happen to this music in years time?…..

Super co-sign on “There were far too many self important and overly comfortable white people at the Hip Hop Honors.” Also agree re: Lupe although it’s been well noted that, despite him sounding like a descendent of the Native Tongues fam, that he is not much of a fan of or even that knowledagble about ATCQ’s music.

I got so many questions.. but you mention PMD and I really want to know is, I respect you (Rosenberg) a lot and think you are ill to hip hop right now so I am curious, your nickname PMD.. where did you get that, does it stand for Peter Making Dollas? Did you choose it cus of Parrish and does Parrish know or care you use it, probably not I’m guessing? I just always wanted to know why you chose it since I read somewhere that is your DJing name.
Regardless of what you call yourself you are vital to the game right now B! Keep spinning that fire, your show is mighty proper.

also Lupe is a major fag for that I hope he felt embarrassed as fuck and apologized to Q & Phife cus that is just disrespect.

I think Peter’s DJ name was given to him back in his White Flint mall Foot Locker days or one of the gay dudes who worked over at 12 inch dance records gave him that name back in the day and it has stayed with him ever since.

WE IN THE BUILDING FAM!!!!!

Man, go over to the OKP boards. It all started a while back when Lupe said that he never heard MM and “didnt care to”. So this has brought that issue back up again.

Big co-sign on Whodini !
Artists needs to stop biting and “giving props” ! Put real money (for instance a group like UGK they remade The Symphony with Kane and Marley Marl and Cham who brought back Slick Rick !!!) in theirs pockets!

Does anyone know what time this airs on Sunday or Monday?
Danny! | Oct 6, 2007 | Reply
it airs, 1-3 AM on Hot 97 Sunday night/Monday morning! I think HOT 97 needs to smarten up and give him a bigger time slot, like starting at 11 or 12 cus he plays the biggest tunes on that station period. He gets you hype then show ends so quick its not right.
Thanks Wes LOL I figured there was some story behind it. Damn I think everyone has worked at Foot Locker at one point in life, I did my damn self.
Anyway Tune in 2 Rosenberg + Tell a friend LOL. Show is doin it big. Best thing to listen to when your coolin on a Sunday night.

damn son chill with all the shit talking about white people, it doesn’t make you look any cooler in they eyes of other ethnic groups because you dissed other whites. sounds like you have something to prove to others. anyways shit was bananas.
damn | Oct 6, 2007 | Reply
I think the problem with the dissing of white people is that in events like this one that honor the golden age, people bring all kinds of previous baggage from that era, part of which is the attitude. Back then if you were chilling with all these rappers, and you were white, you were either a cool record exec, or italian/greek/jewish, or super lucky. So it’s a big contrast when today anybody can just show up to a golden age revival and be like “Wussup, I’m down”. YEAH RIGHT! WHAT STREET YOU CLAIM? Nah’mean?
It’s like that Jay lyric from ‘8Miles”
Claimin’ they been runnin’ and tellin’ everybody like Martin Lawerence
‘Bout how hot my rap performance was before I was who I was
Claimin’ that they threw it up before I threw it up
You what? Where was you before I blew this up?
I didn’t see you in the courtroom when everybody was suin’ us
I didn’t see you in all black when everybody was suitin’ up
Back on the block, gettin’ it in, there wasn’t no you with us

How does Parrish Smith feel about you calling yourself PMD? I’ve been curious to see how he’d respond to that.
Spirit | Oct 6, 2007 | Reply
PMD = Peter from Maryland, yes?
I also recall that the O.G. PMD was aware and accepting of his jewish namesake.
I too heard a report on Jazzy Joyce’s set. Supposedly everyone in the room was rockin’ too. I’m glad I was not there to witness it.
And not to pile on Lupe but how can he write some of the most sophisticated lyrics in the game but flub his part of the tribute? Laziness or lack of respect? Or maybe it’s just a case of everyone screwing up sometimes. No emcee is perfect.

Peter,
Tribe didn’t cut the set short because of Phife. I dunno where you got that from, but call me.

PETE is still stuck in his little “I MUST BE SPECIAL” stage.

that open bar destroyed me quick. either that or somebody drugged me, but i’m sayin’…
for the record, older “originator” cats are much, much easier to kick it with than the young flashy dudes who blackberry-d and posted up all evening.

First of all Peter I’m glad to hear someone at that radio station is playing the kind of hip hop music I love Keep up the great work! We have Sway and Tech out here on the west coast holding it down on Friday nights so it’s good to know I can go back home to New York and catch your show.
Second, wow to find out that Phife is ill is disturbing to me but I’m going to pray that we don’t lose another great artist who make the real hip hop.
Third, you need to get syndicated with the quickness I’d love to hear your show live rather than having my dude JFigurez from 92.3 FM from down the dial in your market record your show and sending me the MP3 every week.
That’s right Peter, JFigurez listens to your show and he is a huge fan of what you’re doing. LOL

Hip hop fans need to chill back a little bit… get perspective… real hip hop for most people is like that round the way girl that you never pay attention to, but will get all pissy about if someone looks at her the wrong way
Lupe fucked up… ok… I’m not apologetic for the dude, but come on… when you get perspective, would you put Electric Relaxation on the level of the national anthem?… I hope not
Half of these fronting cats will jock the old hits but won’t support an artist’s new material (Who’s been checking for Phife recently?)

I hear you..How is Lupe going up there and knowing the song….This generation does not care about the People before them….Hip Hop needs a bully to get rid of the un talented Rappers!….50 did it, then got quiet!..Please start it up again 50!..I think that rappers should not be honored unless you have a song that is 20 yrs old or you influenced someone!

LOL @ The Busta Comments and it was sad to see Phife like that Tribe is one of the best hiphop groups ever…VERB
Pikahsso | Oct 9, 2007 | Reply
Damn….respect to you Peter….but if no one mentioned the fact that Lupe fucked up in blogs and such….would people even have noticed….it was a 1 second screw up (that I think was played off well)….I think the comments he made after the fact, question his character moreso than his performance….but he said he TOLD Q-Tip he was unfamiliar with that particular CD and it’d be ‘phony’ for him to honor their music…Tip still wanted him….maybe he knew the words and fukked up….too hype??….look who this little cat in the game was performing for….some greats….that he didn’t grow up listening to by the way….
Meazy | Oct 9, 2007 | Reply
who saw the dude in the green wifebeater near the front of the stage?
Lupe would have gotten a pass if he didn’t have that ignorant ass post on okp
busta RIPPED it…
tracy morgan didn’t even host the show…
why was missy honored
why was pharell rocking all red and had a “B” on is cap when he was honoring snoop
T.I. (whom i don’t really care for) did his thing
Erykah badu killed
Why was miss honored?????????

Okay, I don’t have cable so I’m just now catching up with this shit on the VH1 site.
How come NO ONE is mentioning that Busy Bee, KRS-One & Grandmaster Caz gave the best performance of the whole show??!!? Who else but Kris has the balls to freestyle at an event like that? Busy Bee displayed an act of mc’ing, not shouting.
Yeah, the crowd went crazy for Busta but his kirk-out wasn’t that compelling.
Maybe I’m just an old crazy hip-hop dude but I always put in my Wild Style VHS tape when I need to get that feeling back.
Big ups to Nick Cannon who held down his role even though he probably wasn’t even born when Whodini came out.
I thought it was pretty cool when Doug E. came out to start the NJS segment, considering Teddy Riley produced The Show when he was like 13 yrs old. Too bad Teddy sounded like his lungs were collapsing.

I don’t give a fuck what no one says… TRIBE gave the best performance of the show. Hands down no discussion. I still don’t fucking understand why Lupe was chosen OVER Talib for the honor part.. that was a stupid ass decision, I know Mos cancelled and Kanye was busy and Lil Wayne was locked up so the first choices weren’t gonna pop off but Talib still farrrr better choice than Lupe, I mean COME ON VH1 get your shit together, AND HELL FUCK YEA you can see and hear his fuck up and laugh like it’s funny it’s very clear and obvious.
I do agree though why the fuck was Missy honored???
Timbaland HONORING Missy????? That shit straight ass backward.
And yea there was nuff people that looked like they did not belong at all, both black and white.. but you know VH1 had to mix it in since white kids are the only ones who actually buy cd’s still.
And FUCK is Pharell retarted with the red. Like really bro you the only one on stage blooded out, not a good look.
Big up the Tribe and bless Phife for real.
