That’s right. I walk the walk. We dissed MTV’s wack MC list and did our own instead! Only the people can vote on our list. Listen to the show and vote at Hot97.com. Oh yeah–you also may enjoy Boot Camp droppin by for an interview and cipher…

I wanna vote for Phontigga.
Love your show. And, 28 is NOT old!!!! *iturn29nextmonth*

your list is better than MTV.
However, Black Thought & Chino XL are GLARING ABSCENCES on the list.
Both had albums in 2006, so they should be “current” enough.
And in terms of “skills”, come on son skills-wise BT & Chino are in the top-tier all-time, & 2007, skills-wise.

out of that list of 24, I voted for Phonte.
Phonte has a sick combination of insightful lyrics about “everyday life struggles”, + hilarious punchlines that have double meanings.
“I speak to you, & this is the year, that I’ma Schiavo my rivals, n, pull out the feeding tube”
“And when I’m on stage, live is how I hit em up
J-League’s the 2nd coming, yall still trying to get it up”
“So to all my almost-famous halfway-superstar ns we gonna rock up there
we bout to get it started I’m the life of the party
you sheep-ass ns can shut to flock up, baah!

Poll Results so far:
Lil Wayne: 11.7%
Saigon: 43.7%
Phonte: 0.4% (What a fucking embarrassment!; I’ma have to vote for him 100 times)
Black Thought: Not on the list (amazing)
Potentially good signs for NY:
Kweli: 6.7%
Joell Ortiz: 1.9% (and hopefully rising - a young terror on the mic)
50 Cent: 0.3%
Thanks for putting this out there PMD. Too bad NY is still voting for Jay-Z (4.6%) & Nas (6.9%) as artists with hunger and potential.

PMD, I respect your opinion but if you listen to what my man brings on Game Theory (matter of fact, just listen to Clock with No Hands more than once). Thinking dude ain’t still hungry is nuts. More importantly, the fact that Nas, Jay-Z & the Game could be on the list (citing hunger & potential) is ridiculous. I’ll probably never get on board with the Wayne comments but do you. Hopefully, I can get Phonte up to 1%.

I like the fact that folks are pointing out MCs that are missing, but to second P’s statement bout Thought - be clear, this isn’t an all time nicest list cause then we’d have to throw in Rakim, KRS, Big Daddy Kane to begin with…but it’s right now who’s the best, taking everything going on right now into account. Game Theory was a crazy album, I was bumping that in the whip on Saturday and maybe if Game Theory had just came out Thought would be on the list. But for the most part you can point to a current project for every artist in that list whether it be a recent album release (Joell, Common), an upcoming album (Nas, Sean P), a fairly new/new single (Saigon), recent remix/featured apperance (Hov, ) or mixtapes (Wayne, Skyzoo, Kardi)…for example. So don’t take an omission as oversight, it’s just that some dudes aren’t in the mix right now. And as far as the skills, hunger, potential scale…some artists with crazy skills like a Hov or Nas def have less hunger than a Skyzoo for instance, but does that mean they’re not worthy of the list. There are some artists with crazy hunger and potential who lack skills, def a balancing act - but there’s no denying Hov and Nas in any convo of this nature. Leaving them out would essentially invalidate the list. Lol. 50…we could do with out tho…lol, but’s that’s another conversation all together.

Mic from Real Late with Peter Rosenberg | Aug 14, 2007 | Reply
My criticism of Rosenberg’s dismissal of Black Thought from the ill current MC list. Again, Rosenberg this is just my opinion, & don’t take any of this as a personal attack. Just trying to have a logical debate, this ain’t Faux Noise here
1 “How much more POTENTIAL does thought have??”
In the current mainstream radio/video environment, The Roots may never sell 3X+ platinum like Kanye or whomever. BUT The Roots are NOT going away. They tour around the world, and have a core loyal fan base. I explained in the last post that Thought has rapped mad different FLOWS great over many types of BEATS/MUSIC over many types of SUBJECT MATTER, & is great whether a STUDIO RECORDING or LIVE. Given such extreme veratility/talent, I would never want to “write off” Thought as not having “POTENTIAL”. On their new album in 2008, Thought will undoubtedly do something innovative you haven’t seen before. No offense to the artists on the list, but most of them incl Wayne & Kanye will never achieve anywhere close to the versatility/talent Thought has done, & will probably keep doing.
2 “he has never said THAT much”
As I commented in the prior post, Thought has rapped about many topics. Dmax said ref “Clock With No Hands” for introspective stuff. Thought is most known for battle rap, although Game Theory is mostly socioeconomic/political commentary & introspective stuff.
Rosenberg, I feel you have an invalid concept that
battle rap = saying nothing
yet
materialistic brag rap = is saying nothing
Totally disagree there, both are basically saying nothing. I can enjoy either if they’re done by incredible rappers (eg battle Thought, materialistic Jay-Z), even if they’re not saying much.
3 “I don’t know anything about who he is”
Rosenberg, I feel you have an invalid concept that
not talking excessively about your own life = not a good rapper.
In recent years many rappers that have been both commercial & critical successes, like Jay-Z & Eminem, talk about their “life stories” extensively. Of course, for many rappers, at least parts of their “story” may be exaggeration or outright lies, but put that aside.
Thought talks about himself some, but not to the extent of say Jay-Z. Thought may be an introvert, & not want to put “everything out there”. His mom was murdered, which might make someone not want to detail their life explicitly on wax.
Questlove had an article/blog once saying that Thought is the last in the MC tradition of Rakim (I can’t find this article, if you have it pls post), in that he doesn’t rap excessively about his personal life. If you recall Rakim doesn’t talk about his personal life that much on the album “Paid In Full”.
Basically I’m saying the frequency that one talk about his “story” has no relation positive or negative to that rapper’s skills.
FINALLY, check this link & click “commentary”. Kweli admits that Thought sons Kweli, & “that as far as MCs, no one focks with Thought”

btw, recall that Thought “murdered Big Pun on his own shit” on “Super Lyrical”
Forget about the questionable concepts that MTV/others hype, of nebulous “relevance” or quasi-gay “swagger”. Neither has anything to do with rap skills IMHO.
Who on Rosenberg’s list of 24 rappers could avoid “getting murdered on their own shit” on a hypothetical “Super Lyrical 2007″ & actually equal Thought lyrically?
Maybe a few like Phonte & Nas.
Little Wayne or Kanye? FOH. Thought wouldn’t “murk Little Wayne on his own shit”, Thought would straight-up GENOCIDE Wayne! BARBARIC!!
NoMamesBuey | Aug 15, 2007 | Reply
see this is exactly why all this shit is so arbitrary–cuz I’m AMAZED that you say Thought murdered pun on “Super Lyrical”. I can’t even fathom thinking Thought’s appearance outshined Pun’s…like..you lost me homes…which is why these discussions can be frustrating and fruitless, cuz we all obviously have very different standards….
pmd | Aug 15, 2007 | Reply
Thought murdering Pun is a bit far fetched in my opinion. Pun was never outshined on ANY track. Don’t let that comment cause you to not start getting down with Thought’s underrated excellence (pause).
Barbaric!
