So Long Sopranos, Hello New York….

Well, it’s over. I have NEVER been so excited for a final season of a television show–and it’s over. It was too short. Regardless of what you may think of last night’s finale–this was not a disappointing season. In fact, it was a pretty brilliant final show. Chase toyed with us for an hour and five minutes. Everyone waited for the big bang when it fact the big bang happened last week. It was sort of a reactionary episode in that sense. Alan Taylor and David Chase (director and writer respectively) knew what our anticipation for major disaster would be and they fucked with us intentionally. I haven’t been that scared listening to Journey since the last time I caught myself listening to Journey.

That said–there were some issues that I had with the episode. After all that drama–it just took talking to Little Carmine? I feel like that would have been the first thing Tony would have done. Also the final edit was really frustrating. Especially because my brother’s dvr hiccuped the minute before and it really just felt like a cable blip–and the series was over. Regardless of how brilliant it was supposed to be–it was disappointing to fans. I don’t think one Sopranos fan wasn’t at least a little bit like “that was it??” And I didn’t need more death or major resolution, but just a satisfying fadeout. I spent eight years with this show and I deserved more than a cut-off in mid scene.

Actually, when you think about it–it was the exact opposite feeling that the Six Feet Under finale gave you. And honestly, I have never met people who loved a finale more than SFU’s. It was loved and highly regarded by people who had never even seen the show. It was mind bogglingly depressing, but so incredibly satisfying. Tonight’s Sopranos was sort of like a half a handjob. But handjobs are like pizza, even when it’s only half, it’s still delicious. Or wait–the Sopranos are like pizza? Whatever I hope they do a movie…I think.
