Daryl and I used to argue all the time back on JFK about Steve Nash’s MVP worthyness and I’m atually mad in retrospect that I even wasted a second discussing it. I mean Daryl really understands dick about the NBA, but still, it’s embarassing to even mention. This guy has more of an impact on the Suns than I can recall any player affecting their team since the days of Shaq playing more than 50 games a season. And even then, Shaq wasn’t bringing immesne skill to the table. It was really his size and presence that changed games so much.I watched the Suns last week while they were in the midst of their 1-3 stretch without Nash leading up to the All-Star break. It was unreal. They had no spacing, no timing, no nothing. They were a bunch of talented chickens running with around with their heads cut off.

Nash returned to the line up tonight in LA against the Clippers.

I really am the first person to say that white athletes usually get entirely too much credit. In the case of Nash, though, he doesn’t get enough credit. He still gets less attention than Kobe, Carmelo, Lebron, and Wade. Hell he gets less attention than Gil Arenas now. And he’s better than all of them. I’m serious. I would take Nash over ANY of those guys. He only played 27 minutes tonight (13 points, 12 assists), but I cannot over emphasize what he did to the Suns’ chemistry and cohesiveness. Amare and Marion are great without Nash, but with him, they’re incredible. Amare and Nash’s interior passing is truly something special.

I agreed with the Charles “I kiss 67 year old men on the lips” Barkley’s asessment after the game, though, that the Suns have to play Marcus Banks and Leandro Barbosa at the point more in order to prepare them for the playoffs. Nash needs to be able to rest. He’s 33 years old and 5′9. He also plays at about 130 miles an hour. If he plays 35-40 tough minutes a night, he will not be at his best come late May. And as we observed last week, that won’t work for the Suns. If they can rest Nash and keep him healthy, though, the Suns WILL win the finals.

  1. Pete, I agree with you dawg, but you went a little overboard when you said you’d take him over Bryant, who in my opinion is the hands down best player in the league right now. But, for anyone who says “the NBA sucks and the NBA is boring and the NBA is only one on one” has obviously never watched Steve Nash orchestrate some of the best team ball the L has ever seen. There is no question in my mind that when Nash is in the lineup the Suns play the most entertaining form of basketball that is out there at any level of the game. As for MVP he certainly has been worthy the last two seasons, and is once again worthy this year, BUT, they have got to feel for Dirk who didn’t get it last year and will probably reward him with it this year. It will be interesting to see, however, if Nash can translate the Suns style of play into a title run though, as we have seen, he has been unsuccessful in Dallas with Dirk and Finley when he was good, as well as in Phoenix, I wish the best for him. Nice Blog btw.

  3. word up…and for the record—i LOVE kobe…I watch him every time he’s on…but the Lakers can’t buy a win these days with him and Odom in the line up…I bet the Suns won’t lose three in a row the rest of the year..maybe not even two in a row…
