Wrestling’s Best and Worst of 2006
By pmd on Jan 3, 2007 in Sports, Wrestling |
I know it’s cliched to do the old “end of the year review” but without any further ado–here’s Peter Rosenberg’s “Best and Worst of 2006″. Keep in mind, I am not a TNA head. In due time (particularly with Angle making the move) I’m sure I will get down, but I am just a year back into wrestling and I am not prepared to deal with a six sided ring. I know that sounds superficial if not a bit old school, but I HATE IT!
That said–let’s do this…..
Sexiest Diva - Ashley
Her body is not normal. Period. (Krystal was a close runner up)

Don’t ever call me gay for watching wrestling
Best Play by Play - Michael Cole
Real Talk. Michael Cole has grown on me and not just because I want a job on WWE.com. He isn’t as face as Gorilla or Vince back in the day, but he is a perfect compliment to JBL who is on pace to become one of the great heel color guys of all time. Cole is a straight shooter who calls matches like they’re real matches. You get the sense Cole could easily switch over to sports commentary if he wanted to, but I hope he doesn’t.
Best Color Commentator - John Bradshaw Layfield
He is a color commentary God. JBL cracks me up at least once a week and is truly following in the footsteps of Jesse “The Body”. This is an example of Vince really using someone well. JBL is perfect for this gig. I would actually love to see Cole and JBL calling Raw. I’m not holding my breath, though.
Best Ring Entrance - Randy Orton
When Orton gets on the mic–meh–he’s not so great. But as far as entrance charisma goes, he’s the best. This was locked up once Triple H was thrown back into DX. The game could have won this category, but the gay DX outfits and
unintimidating DX intro just don’t cut it for me.
Best Feud - Edge and John Cena
Say what you want, but at this point no one is a better heel than Edge and Cena really improved over the last several months. His energy has always been awesome, but his in-ring skills have really stepped up. I was on the fence about this one until I saw them in person on Raw a few weeks back at the Verizon Center in DC. They were great.
Wrestler of the Year (female) — Mickie James
I know Mickie takes a beating for her character or lack there of, but there is not a better in ring performer among the divas. She pours it out every night. She’s acrobatic, creative, and sexy as hell. She did really well as an obsessed Trish Stratus fan turned psychopath, but since the feud with Trish–she’s lacked any depth as a character. I still believe, though, that she should be the future of the women’s division. I would love to see a good Mickie-Melina feud in the next year.

Hopefully Adam Copeland will get some more title time in 2007. Is he Jewish by the way??
Wrestler of the Year (male) — Edge
Edge was involved in everything that was interesting about the last year of Raw (and as it turned out–ECW). From his title run at the beginning of the year to helping out RVD at One Night Stand, Edge heated things up. If you went to any live shows this year–you know just how much heat Edge generated. On top of his charisma, Edge can take a beating too. He is the perfect heel for John Cena and I expect to see them renew their rivalry soon.
Rookie of the Year - CM Punk
This was an obvious one. Punk has some promo work to do, but the dude can wrestle–straight up. I would LOVE to see Punk move to Smackdown for a Kennedy-Punk feud in 2007.
In closing, my 2006 Power Rankings…
10. RVD
9. Randy Orton
8. King Booker
7. The Big Show
6. The Undertaker
5. Lashley
4. John Cena
3. CM Punk
2. Mr. Kennedy
1. Edge

Peter, love the radio show, even its non-broadcasted form as I’ve just discovered the Attic podcasts. I’m down with the mix of hip-hop and liberal politics that you cant find ANYWHERE else on the radio. Keep doing your thing.
But dont you know that your precious “sports” of wrestling and boxing will soon be overtaken by MMA/UFC.

“. This was locked up once Triple H was thrown back into DX. The game could have won this category, but the gay DX outfits and

Your opinions are your own and everything but you can’t deny the pop that DX got wherever they went, no one was more over aside from Hogan at Summerslam. An entrance isn’t about being intimidating, its about generating a buzz in the arena. Granted DX’s entrance takes too long and the quote “Lets get ready to suck it….and if you’re not down with that…suck it” makes absolutely no sense, but you can’t deny their fan reaction and the buzz they created.
I agree Orton can’t cut a promo but he is good in-ring. Aside from that, he’s a dick. The guy acts like he’s a god. The wrestling buisness is about respect backstage and he doesn’t have any for anybody. You’re calling the DX entrance gay and you don’t think Orton is a fag? Look at the way he raises his arms and gives that queer smirk. Thats not intimidating its just gay.
As far as best entrance, I’d have to say Batista’s is pretty strong, especially the fireworks near the beginning, its reminiscent of Goldberg. Unfortunately, his in-ring skills haven’t been the same since he came back from injury.
